Sun's new owner plans to charge for its use

Spanish woman claims ownership of sun, wants to tax it

AFTER billions of years the Sun finally has an owner - a woman from Spain's soggy region of Galicia says she's registered the star at a local notary public as being her property.

Angeles Duran, 49, told the online edition of daily El Mundo she took the step in September after reading about an American man who had registered himself as the owner of the moon and most planets in our Solar System.

There is an international agreement which states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star, but it says nothing about individuals, she added.

"There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law. I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first."

The document issued by the notary public declares Duran to be the "owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the centre of the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of about 149,600,000 kilometres".

Duran, who lives in the town of Salvaterra do Mino, said she now wants to slap a fee on everyone who uses the Sun and give half of the proceeds to the Spanish government and 20 per cent to the nation's pension fund.

She would dedicate another 10 per cent to research, another 10 per cent to ending world hunger -- and would keep the remaining 10 per cent herself.

"It is time to start doing things the right way. If there is an idea for how to generate income and improve the economy and people's well-being, why not do it?" she asked.

It's a funny story, this lady actually seems to have a good sense of humor, and obviously no one will actually heed this.

What I'm a little scared about is the inevitability that countries will ignore the international agreement (which states no country may claim ownership of foreign planets) once we can actually colonize them.

They should tell her she'll get her money as soon as she goes up there and plants a flag on that sucker.

Re: Sun's new owner plans to charge for its use

There was some dude who tried to claim the planets after International Treaties said "no country" could claim ownership of the planets. Since that was in either the late-70s to 80s, I'm amazed its taken that long for someone to do the same with the sun.

If that lady wants to charge me, she can try. It really doesn't matter who "owns" the sun, what matters is how they are going to force people to pay for its use.

PS: Jesus gonna be angry at her when she dies.

What's all this bull**** of ownership of celestial bodies?! How can any person or any country claim ownership of something that existed for millions of years, cannot be touched, and HAS NOTHING OF EARTHLY VALUE ON IT?!!!

Will somebody claim they own the Sky? How about the Air we breath?! Hell, why not just claim you own ****ing HEAVEN AND HELL, while you're at it?!!

Oh, and a fee for "anyone who uses the sun", eh? That narrows it down to.....
              EVERYONE ON THE ****ING PLANET!!!

I need to find a notary. I want to claim ownership of "life, the universe, and everything" and charge everyone 42 cents a day to exist.

Which will almost cover the amount you'd have to pay Douglas Adams' estate on a daily basis.

I'll pay as long as I can hold her responsible when a giant solar flare wipes out the ozone.

Seems like a lot of bother. You should just buy the image of the moon and collect royalties when its likeness is used in media.

People and countries already claim ownership of Earth's land and sea, which have also existed for millions of years.

Sue her for sunburn, and skin cancer. Also she cant even keep it out of my eyes when its setting in my living room. Its really irritating. She needs to learn how to control that thing, or it should be taken away from her.
