    North Korea attacked South Korea

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapc...ire/index.html - Video

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea fired artillery toward its tense western sea border with South Korea on Tuesday, killing at least one South Korean soldier, the Yonhap news agency reported.
Two civilians and 13 other South Korean military personnel were injured, with three of the soldiers seriously hurt, Yonhap said.
At least 200 rounds of artillery hit an inhabited South Korean island in the Yellow Sea after the North started firing about 2:30 p.m. local time, Yonhap said.
South Korea's military responded with 80 rounds of artillery and deployed fighter jets to counter the fire, the report said.
The South Korean army also raised its alert condition, the report said.
Images of plumes of smoke were quickly broadcast on Yonhap television from the island of Yeonpyeong, but it was not immediately clear what the artillery had hit.
The island has a total of about 1,300 residents, a fisherman who lives on the island told Yonhap.
Some residents started fleeing for the South Korean mainland, which is about 145 kilometers (90 miles) away. Other residents were seeking shelter at schools.
The South Korean government immediately called an emergency meeting of its security ministers.
The North Korean fire came as the South's military conducted routine drills in waters off the island, which is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the North.

Well that wasn't the news I was expecting. I wonder how South Korea will retaliate, and/or what happens next.

I think Terr is better at these things, so I'm going to check in with him in our studio...

"Our navy was conducting a maritime exercise near the western sea border today. North Korea has sent a letter of protest over the drill. We're examining a possible link between the protest and the artillery attack," presidential spokeswoman Kim said, according to Yonhap.

I'm surprised things hadn't escalated sooner considering North Korea very blatantly sank a South Korean ship earlier in the year.

Am I the only one becoming increasingly worried about an outright war in Korea?

Actually, it is pretty scarey. Because North Korea is pretty crazy... well, the leader is... okay I don't see the difference. Either way, ****!

Re: North Korea attacked South Korea

I generally try to avoid talking politics and beliefs at the Pav, but North Korea is really one of my hot-button issues. The mere fact that its "government" is allowed to stand just sickens me. It's pretty scary because they've got a standing army of around 1,000,000 soldiers and no one is rebelling because they've found the perfect mix of lies, suppression, and fear. South Korea can't feasibly fight this and hope to remain a developed country--and really, they shouldn't be the only ones who have to fight these enemies of freedom.

This is exactly the kind of place where it is the rest of the world's job to unite, threaten Pyongyang, and--if necessary--attack (in a way that causes as few civilian and even as few soldier deaths as possible - this is why you can't just nuke the place sky high as some crazies suggest) to threaten the authority and lives of those in power.

Unfortunately, no one really seems to care, except South Korea and its allies, and even then, it's only a matter of ensuring South Korea's safety.

I know a lot of you guys are going to say "it's not our responsibility" or "war is never justified" but I hope you'd feel differently if you were being denied of your rights to knowledge, freedom, well-being, and self-determination every day of your life.

                            Rep'd.
I expected North Korea to attack at some point, since for a little over a decade foreign relations between NK, SK and the U.S. have been strained, to say the least.

What's the point of having an emergency response system if you can't provoke the wrath of God?

But yeah, North Korea's been very worrisome for over a decade now, as stated above. We had no business being in the Middle East (aside from lining Bush's pockets). But North Korea is something we have needed to take a long, hard look at for quite some time now.
