I don't really like the idea of a company milk a series as hard as they are trying to with AC. A game in a year or less is just a money cow now, whether it is good or not.
If you count all the portable and mobile games they've been pumping out more than 1 a year all along.
Anyway, all the reviews are glowing. And multiplayer gives me a reason to buy it rather than just rent/borrow like I did the first two. I'll get it when I get a PS3.
I haven't picked this up yet, but I plan to... at first I'd thought this would be a multiplayer game with a bare-bones single-player campaign, but it seems to be pretty meaty all the way around.
Given that AC2 is a greatest hit and easily found for $30, John Mora, there's not much reason to duck that or Brotherhood. I've heard Brotherhood doesn't give much of an intro for first-time players as far as story goes though, from the review at 1up.
I think most would agree that you aren't missing too much by skipping the first game. I haven't played any of the handhelds.
So you're a fish out of water...

I'm in the same boat actually; it's why I probably won't pick it up until late December or January. Magus' reviews of P3P and FF: 4 Heroes made me want to go out and buy them that day, but I just can't find the time. I'm still trying to wrap up Resonance of Fate, which is pretty charming and has a unique and challenging battle system.
Just trying to make the point that $30 for AC2 is a lot of bang for your buck and a nice entry point to the series.
