So how long as it been since DK actually had a platformer, and not just music games and the requisite 20 yearly appearances in Mario Party games and other Nintendo crossover properties?

I don't know if you meant to post that on a costume account or not, but the last I know of is Donkey Kong Country 3. Ironically Donkey Kong Country 1-3 are all with in ten feet of me. It was released in 1996. So quite a while.

It's great, the levels are so vivid and fun.

Worst part is you have to shake to roll, when I figured that out I was pretty angry, but at level 4 I stopped caring because it really doesn't interfere with the gameplay.
