Giant internet blacklist on the way for America?

    Wut?

Just the other day, President Obama urged other countries to stop censoring the Internet. But now the United States Congress is trying to censor the Internet here at home. A new bill being debated this week would have the Attorney General create an Internet blacklist of sites that US Internet providers would be required to block.

"Just twenty minutes after the 'Internet Blacklist bill' was passed, ten thousand sausage and cheese pizzas were mailed to the Speaker of the House's home, and his email was filled with depictions of gay and scat pornography. It is believed that the origin of the pizzas and obscene emails is related to a site called '4chan.'"

How can we fight Internet Piracy if we can't see it??

I work for some sites - and I send out DMCA Take-Down notices for them when I see their stuff pirated.

This bill would likely block the very sites distributing the stuff, and thus limit my ability to do my job!!

We'll see if this makes it through congress, and if it does I'm countin' on Obama to veto that *****.

If it makes it through a Democrat-controlled Congress, Obama won't do jack. He's a party man down the line, so if they support this, he will too.

Obama has done little to counter act the Bush era government freedom grab, and many ways has made it worse (indefinite dentition).

Re: Giant internet blacklist on the way for America?

The biggest problem with this bill is that it doesn't attack things like the torrent sites where a good chunk of the piracy occurs, it can hit something like YouTube where users put up vids they don't have legal rights to. As it is now, sites like YouTube pull vids of that sort when they're found, but they don't have time to police the whole site.

The real issue is that once again, the entertainment industry is being a bunch of lazy, reactionary, overprotectionist bastards who don't want to adapt to the internet age, and they're relying on the ignorance of politicians who don't use and aren't familiar with the websites that can be affected here. I don't think it's necessarily a matter of the politicians being oppressive, just ignorant of the facts. And in such ignorance, the industries pushing for this crap overstate the whole economic impact, because in the current economic environment, the politicians are more likely to support such a bill because they might believe it will help the overall economy.

To be completely honest, most people pirate things that they wouldn't normally buy. The whole "billions lost to the industry", is a load of crap because they aren't taking into account the actual consumers that stopped their purchase to pirate a copy (which is impossible to figure out, thus making those studies useless).

All of the music I download, I would never buy. I just do not have an interest in buying music, ever (even before I ever found out about torrents). So does me downloading this music actually make the company loose money? No, because if it wasn't for those torrents I wouldn't give a rats ass about getting the stuff. In fact, I am willing to bet that torrents and illegal music downloading has actually helped expose many great artists to the masses because nobody would pick up random artist X album and buy it just to see if they like them.

You also have to consider the fact that these industries only exist because of the technology.

For the vast majority of human history, music has existed. Yet, it only existed in its mass market form for the last 40 or 50 years. Prior to that, people made music just for fun, or if they did make money off it, it was only through live performances.

In a way, its just coming full circle.
