The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Just picked this up on Blu-Ray last night, actually watched it the same day (gasp!), and although it may be a bit premature, I'd ALMOST be willing to say this is an instant top twenty of all time. It was really that good.

The girl in question was just jaw-droppingly good in the role. With only a look or a gesture, she conveyed a character who was strong-willed and independent with an undercurrent of vulnerability, darkness, sadness, and yearning. And the extremely dark mystery that is the plotline was pretty wonderful in its own right.

Has anyone else seen this? David Fincher is doing the American version, apparently.

Oh how long I've been waiting for Perv to make this topic.

I haven't watched the Swedish movie yet, but I have read the book it's based on, and its two sequels. At first I was extremely bored with the insane amount of plot and character setup in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, because it takes its sweet time setting up a ton of individual plot threads and characters. Somewhere in the mix I became fascinated with how deep and real everything felt, and I was hooked.

Lisbeth Salander is the most infuriatingly anti-social person, and very easy to fall into the same corner with due to her miasma of social inabilities. She's a very independent person, who keeps discovering how very dependent she is.

At its core, it's a great mystery and a whole lot of escapist fantasy for the male archetype (the real main character, Mikael Blomkvist, has sex with practically every single woman in the entire series). Despite its slow beginnings and the almost fetishist nature of Salander's decriptions, and the escapist element of Blomkvist's sexuality, the entire series is very good.

          Well, no.

Actually, in the film version, her character is shown more often than not in closeups with all her imperfections magnified...all her pores are visible, etc. She's not "Hot" in the conventional sense of the word, and even if I was really into goth chicks, I've seen much better-looking than her.

Really, it's just her magnetic performance, and how whenever she's in a scene, your eyes are inevitably drawn to her.

Plus, I really dug the strong feminist bent to the film and her character, and was almost cheering (even though I was watching by myself) when she got her deserved revenge for her rape. Really, it couldn't have been any better, and was actually extremely gratifying.

I still cannot get over just how mesmerizing she was in the role. Probably my favorite scene in the film was when the ostensible main (male) character confronted her about sending the email. The wordless shot that follows, focused solely on her face, spoke volumes about her motivation and herself as a person.

Taking into account a previous scene in which she sends the email, where she lets down the determined, fiercely independent guard, and conveys a nervous giddiness where she's out of control of all that may follow, makes the confrontation that much stronger.

Oh, and although I've watched and enjoyed Scandinavian cinema for over 15 years now, it's only recently that I've become aware that this area of the world (and Sweden especially) has become my de facto favorite for challenging, emotionally resonant and/or unsettling films.

I can't imagine how tiresome a movie like that would be to watch.

                    saw it.

                    really enjoyed it.

                    heard the followups are disappointing.

I'll assume the conversation moved back to the original topic with that response. Either that or Highwind is disturbed on a significant level.

Re: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Just bought the first two books in mass market trade paperbacks today. Gonna wait for the third one to go that route instead of buying the hardcover.

EDIT: So as to not double post...I think Fincher directing the American version is completely fitting, as I was heavily reminded of his film Zodiac as I was watching it. The big question mark (and major sticking point with a lot of people, it seems) is the casting of Lisbeth Salander (the titular girl). As good as she may possibly be, I (and a lot of others) think she will be nowhere near as good as Noomi Rapace was in the Swedish version. The actress that will be playing her in Fincher's version is apparently also in his forthcoming film about Facebook.

I've not read too much else about her, but something tells me she will not go the Christian Bale in The Machinist/De Niro in everything route to fill out the character as Rapace did for her role.

Certainly her resume prior to the Social Network is not stellar. But you never know, she could surprise.

I have not read any of these, but will have to consider them after I run through my last couple piles of recently acquired books.
