Obscure muscians you'd like to share...

The song topic gave me an idea to post about artists I'd like to share that many might not be aware of. The listings might motivate someone to check out some of that artist's work, and if not, at the very least, showcase the poster's musical tastes.

I'll try and make these brief...I could go on about them forever...

    1) Ramblin' Jack Elliott

Brooklyn born cowboy Ramblin' Jack Elliott has been part of the American folk scene since the 1950s. Originally a fan and follower of Woody Guthrie, Ramblin' would become known for everything from his signature soft voice and his gentle guitar to his ability to hold some of the longest yoddles and his partnership with Derroll Adams (The Ramblin' Boys).

Those influenced by Ramblin' include everyone from Dylan (who befriended RJE while visiting a dying Guthrie) to the Rolling Stones.

    2) Hank Williams

Lets not confuse Hank Williams' country music for the yee haw, ride my 4x4, shoot my guns kinda country you hear on the radio. This is as basic and archaic as it gets and with that Hank has established himself with a catalog that includes 11 number 1 and 16 top 5 singles plus countless classics. Though he died over 50 years ago at the age of 29, to me, Hank Williams is just....cool...I know that sounds weird, but I think he's just great.

    3) Odetta

Odetta is another folk musician who I first heard of when she released an album of Dylan folk covers (Odetta Sings Dylan - long out of print, 1964). Another solo folk performer, I just love Odetta's deep, soothing voice and her amazing vocal range. Like everyone else, she has her take on traditional songs and her originals are something not to be overlooked. Besides, who could hate that hair?!?!

Speaking of folk musicians, I give you Phil Ochs. I never thought he was obscure, but I'm told he is.

To save time, I'll just link you to the Wikipedia entry I would use to type this post in order to hide my incompitence.

JVR, you probobly know him well, seeing as he was a friend of Bob Dylan's.

                            The Pillows

A lesser known japanese band (maybe well known in japan though).
They do the music for FLCL (though they are a band as well, they don't just do soundtrack music), they have a fairly deep and fluid rock sound. The 3rd soundtrack to FLCL just came out which showcases their songs from the show as the album is all The Pillows. They're a great band.

Nightwish - I can't stress enough how great this Celtic Metal band is. I think that within the last year or so, they've grown quite a bit in fame in the States, but most people have still never heard of them. Around here, because I push them in every music topic, everyone's probably at least aware of them. Their songs have the greatest epic feel to them, and Nightwish stands among some of my alltime favorite bands.
