So, why do you have a Facebook account?

I've been contemplating getting an account and using it for some time. But I can't think of a single good reason why. In fact I have always hated Facebook, despised even. But to tell the truth, I hardly ever used it. I hear it's a good way for employers to get to learn about you as they just look you up which is really the only "good" reason I can think of. As a web developer, I feel like I should know about Facebook a lot more than I do.

Thing is, if I started said account. A real one, not just one where I put my username as my real name. What the heck would I do with it from there? I wouldn't join any groups unless I actually had some real part in it, I wouldn't "friend" anyone unless I knew them personally. I have no desire to play any of those stupid games. I have no friends to "keep in touch with" and have nobody to reconnect with.

I actually already have an account but forgot the temporary e-mail address I used for it some time ago (around 4 years maybe?). Last thing I want is to make another account, have people search it and see nothing on it like my other one.

So anyone here with a Facebook account I ask what do you use it for exactly? Is there any reason why I should make another one or try and go through the hoops of recovering my old account?

I made one to talk to this chick.

I think I deactivated my account though.

I have one so pseudo-friends who send me stuff don't clog up my e-mail box. Also, it works well for planning parties and such since you can send out the info easily and make sure only those invited get the message.

Other than that, I don't really use mine for much, except the occasional yelling at Denmo's brother for being the worse political debater of all time. Don't really do that much anymore since his unrealistic Conservatism and view of the world makes my brain hurt.

None of the people I actually talk to use myspace anymore.

Re: So, why do you have a Facebook account?

I originally signed up for Facebook to get in contact with Starba, and for probably a year and a half she was the only person I had as a friend on it.

After that, people started finding me and its UI is so much better than MySpace that I just switched over. At this point it became my convenient way to keep up with friends in Ohio that I didn't get to see or talk to all the time, as well as touch base with family members around the country and coordinate events like vacations and family reunions and whatnot.

After I was using it for real life friends and family it seemed silly not to start adding my internet friends, cause I judge them just as good if not better than most of my real life friends, so now I keep up with some of the people I've met through the Pav and through WoW with Facebook as well.

More recently I've begun using it to get exposure for my books, and make connections and sales using their Facebook Pages so that I can hopefully begin building a larger-than-Oklahoma fanbase, and it seems to be steadily increasing.

The only other thing I really do with Facebook is find artists/musicians/writers/actors/etc. who use it as a way to communicate with their fanbase and let people know what they've been doing lately with regards to new movies and music and whatever. The lesser known a person is the more likely I am to wanna be a fan of their page or friend them, because I can do my own little part to spread the word about their upcoming projects. Be like their virtual street team, you know?

If none of those things applies to you, then just what the hell do you do all day?

Facebook works best when you have friends.

Yeah, Facebook is great if you have friends. It's how I stay in touch. I have it set up to send me text messages on my phone when a few certain friends change their status. It makes me feel like a stalker and that's pretty cool.

Considering that I am not trying to sell a book. Probably a good thing none of those things apply to me eh?

Re: So, why do you have a Facebook account?

I made one just to see what all the fuss was about. Only friended people I knew or used to know and accepted a couple requests from people I think I remember. Mainly have corresponded with the one friend I IM on a regular basis, my cousin who's in Assghanistan and a high school friend I hadn't seen since her wedding almost 10 years ago. But it's good to see what some old friends are up to. I also play a couple games. Not the Farmvilles and what not but Family Feud and a really crappy version of Wheel of Fortune and this new one called Farkle that's like a really confusing variation of Yahtzee. So Facebook certainly isn't something I need at all but it's not completely useless. Monster Hunter had a pretty cool fan page for a while. With somebody posting as Ironbeard with info, hunting tips, and contests.

I use it to keep in touch with friends I have met that live in different states.

Yes, because that's just one of the things I mentioned and the others hold no merit at all for one such as you. =V

What if you're already in contact with everyone you care to be?

                            Heh. Heh. Heh.

Facebook is a good way to keep in touch with friends and family if they're all signed up. And it's an easy way to judge someone you're not too sure about, just scroll down their wall posts and bam, unless they're smart enough to not divulge stuff, you have a pretty good idea of who you're dealing with.

It also makes for a decent portfolio of sorts. It's a pretty lazy way of getting photos/artwork onto the web (many of my friends do it).

Other than that, you're not missing out on much. Real friends contact you through real means. I feel as though Facebook itself has cheapened the idea of what friendship really is.
                            ...and that's why.

No, they don't actually. But I already explained why in the original post and didn't feel the need to reiterate myself. :V
