another recommend me games thread (PSP edition!)

    hello pavilion gamers.

i recently bought a PSP 3000 and i'm pleased with it for the most part. i bought two games, Socom Fireteam Bravo 3 (it's alright, not the best i've played but i'm a socom fan) and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

those are two games that will keep me busy and i really shouldn't even be considering anymore games right now, but i have a disease, so here i am.

there's like a ton of RPG's for PSP in the PSN store, it's confusing. games i've never heard of before.

i'm looking for quality games. they dont have be amazing gameplay experiences, something average can also appeal to me.

are there any RPG Maker-type games? i know Valk likes Mega Man Powered up, which looks pretty cool. but i remember a dungeon maker game too.

    any suggestions would be great.

The Mega Man games are nice.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is fantastic.

    Lumines is necessary.

    Persona 3 Portable is great.

Just think of what games you like(d) on PS2 and there's likely a PSP version of it.

There are not any RPGMaker style games on the PSP. Duneon Maker isnt anything like an RPG Maker. You slowly build a dungeon that populates with enemies, you slay them, sell the loot, buy more dungeon materials, and repeat ad nauseum until you vomit and trade the game in...I actually used to like the game until i realized that the experience didnt change, and wasnt going to.

Y's 7 and Valkyria Chronicles 2 are coming out this month, and Phantasy Star Portable 2 is coming out on 9/14.

And there is Crisis Core, Jeanne De Ark, and a crapload of other good RPGs and SRPG's.

Yeah, the PSP seriously has the biggest collection of SRPGs ever, possibly excluding the PC. Even non-strategy series like Wild Arms and R-Type have SRPG entries on the system. Biggest suggestion is my personal favorite game, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, which is a must-have for everyone ever. Jeroak's right with both Jeanne d'Arc (best non-port SRPG in years) and Crisis Core (the best of the spinoff games from a numbered FF title, for whatever that's worth). Also, I suggest Final Fantasy Dissidia (crazy RPG/fighting game with the main hero and villain from almost every numbered FF game, massive amounts of stuff to do in it, and a story that would take hundreds of hours to complete), MGS Portable Ops (I've heard Peace Walker is even better, but haven't played it yet), and Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron.

You did right my boy by picking up Feedom Unite. Game will keep you busy forever!

The War of the Lions is probably my biggest psp time sink though, and well worth the 15-20$ to pick it up now.

Tactics Ogre port when it's released
Lumines is a must...I agree with Magus here.
Valkyria Chronicles 2 when it's released
Patapon/Patapon 2 are worth it for $20...basically, they're side-scrolling rhythm-based RTS games (if you can picture that).
The LocoRoco games are also decent.

Other downloadable stuff that's good includes PixelJunk Monsters (generally considered to be one of the best console/handheld tower defense games), Savage Moon (another good tower defense), Half-Minute Hero (basically, ultra-fast old school Zelda-type, 8 bit RPG, and 8 bit shooter in one game), and possibly the PSP versions of Everyday Shooter and flOw...they're both great on the PS3, and the control is supposed to be not horrible on PSP.

Oh, and as for RPGM-style games, why has nobody mentioned LittleBigPlanet's PSP version yet (especially you, Biggie)? Yeah, it's not RPGs you're making, but it's about as close as you're gonna get on PSP. Which is not a bad thing by any stretch, considering the PS3 original was (and still is) very highly regarded.

I got the first Patapon, and enjoyed it for a while...but ultimately, strip away the catchy rhythms and it's just a squad/RTS combat game where your orders have a time delay of several seconds. Which is more annoying than you might think.

I can't say I beat the first Patapon, but it was fun, and worth the 20 bucks. The second one is a bit deeper in terms of troop-building and equipping.

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness and Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days. The PS2 versions are probably better (from what I hear), so you may want to purchase them instead like I did.

I'm sorry, but I still maintain that any sane person needs only one Disgaea game in their collection, and one other NIS SRPG of your choice if you wish to teeter on the edge of sanity.

thanks everyone for the suggestions so far. there's a few that caught my eye...

tactics ogre, war of the lions, phantasy star portable 2. i'll probably just wait for phantasy star though.

i looked at a video of lumines and it doesn't seem like my type of game really.

what kind of things do you make in littlebigplanet?

also, what is the best way to display your psp on the t.v.? i just have a SD sony wega trinitron with component video but i think it only displays in 480i. i tried playing Monster Hunter on the t.v. but it really shrinks the screen and you still have to play with the little psp analog nub which kind of cramps my hand after a while.

i read that you can use you PS3 controller with a PSP Go system. it doesn't work with the 3000 series though

disgaea isn't a game i could get into. i tried it once... but it didn't pull me in.

the controller thing is only for certain games.
