So I picked up Ender's Game...

And I'm reading through it thinking, "Wow, this is great. I can just imagine Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira director) picking this up. This is just his kind of thing!"

And then my curiousity got to me and I did a google search on the series. And I found that Marvel picked it up instead:

    No.

    Just...

    NO.

And then I read that Orson Scott Card is a raging homophobic.

.... THIS SERIES IS RUINED, and I haven't even finished the first book!
    ...and that's why.

According to everyone, the first book is the only one really worth reading.

Which puts me further and further away from ever reading the sequels even though I own two of them.

Basically yes. The first book is excellent, the second book is WHAT THE FUH, and the third book was so boring and so derived from Ender in every way that I put it down halfway through and never picked it up again. I have the other ones too, but I didn't bother with them.

I suppose I'd like to eventually read the parallel novel, Ender's Shadow, which focuses on Bean's viewpoint of the original book, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Still too disgusted with Xenocide.

I actually thought Speaker for the Dead was a pretty good book. It takes awhile to start the good part of the story, but when things start rolling, it gets really good.

Ender's Game is probably one of my favorite books of all time, its amazing.

Card is a raging Conservative, I've heard him on Coast to Coast guest-hosting and being crazy, and I've also heard him guest-host one of the late night radio conservatives (I think it was Dennis Pregar)

I tend to ignore him as a person, since I don't agree with anything he says. He does however, write some really ****ing good books.

Which is funny considering all the naked little boys in the novel.

If you accept the fact that the following books were originally developed as a separate series that got Ender's Game characters grafted onto them at the last moment, they're good. They're just not supposed to be anything like Ender's Game at all.

While the book was OK. I saw the twist coming a mile away, it kind-of ruined it for me.

I love the series. I had to read Ender's Game as my 8th grade reading assignment, and friggin loved it. The sequel, Speaker For The Dead, was possibly even better, but it caused some awkward moments when I was discussing the book to my folks... The whole conflict between the piggies and humans on Lusitania was because of reproduction cycles, not exactly dinner talk

Re: So I picked up Ender's Game...

I made it only through about 50% of the last book (Children of the Mind) and had to stop due to lack of time. Way too much make-believe science for my taste towards the end of the series. Also, (CotM spoiler -->)*** SPOILERS ***
Ender "dies" at not even half way through that book, so the charm of the book relies off of Peter, but he wasn't as evil as I wanted him to be...
                    *** END SPOILERS ***

That's not to say the Speaker of the Dead, Xenocide, or Children of the Mind are bad...I enjoyed them. They're just not as good as Ender's Game. Because who cares about the moral implications of killing talking pigs and trees? And giant bugs for that matter...

I think the point is that we don't usually think about it, but that we should start to consider the value of a life that is wholly alien compared to ourselves.

I'm actually developing a new hobby based on suggested reading from websites and "Top 30 books you should read before you're 30" (which i'm 5 years away from, so why not). It helps me GROW AS A PERSON.

                        and pick up chicks.

Thanks for suggesting I stop at the sequels. That saves me money.

Yeah, the sequels have issues. No question. I'm glad I read them, but at the same time the odds of me rereading them as I did with the first book (which is excellent every time) are very slim. And if I allowed political discrepancies or things of that nature to influence my entertainment choices, my pickings would be slim, especially with movies or TV (I'm a conservative, which would eliminate about 90-95% of the bigger name stars and creative minds in both mediums for being left-skewing). For me, the line is when they are out and out criminals or people who are morally reprehensible enough that giving them my money, even indirectly, is an unpleasant prospect. You won't see me in line for any Roman Polanski films, for example. If I did feel like watching one that wasn't on TV (doubtful, he doesn't seem to have the skills of his earlier days anymore), I'd probably support piracy of it instead of more traditonal channels, and normally that's not a route I go down.

Alec Baldwin's a bit of a grey area. I'd still call his rant against his own child one of the most disgusting celebrity diatribes released to the public. But it didn't quite push him to that point where I can't enjoy anything he does.
