    Deathspank

I forget what the whole controversy was before this game was released (it was gonna be cancelled, and then EA picked it up or something, if memory serves...kinda like the video game equivalent of Wilco, it would seem), but I played the demo a few days ago, and quite enjoyed it.

The hack and slash gameplay mechanics are pretty straightforward, but at least judging from the demo, it's worth playing for the quirky humor alone. There were a few clunkers in the 20 minutes or whatever I played, but most of it forced a smile onto my face.

Even though I've only seen very little of The Tick, this is what the main character reminded me of. I'm willing to spend the $15 on this, because the strange and obscure humor are basically the same type I would include if I ever made a game of this type...actually, my unsubmitted contest entry comes close to this slightly (in terms of dialogue).

In terms of "not being marketable enough" for release, and then being picked up for distribution and receiving positive reviews.

Obviously, in Wilco's case, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was both their career highpoint, and a pointed (albeit unintended) comment at how the record industry works.

        Yeah, man, we got it.

It just seemed a little contrived.

I listened to some dudes who made this game talk about it on a ATB episode, and they sounded like they didn't "get it" at all. They made their game sound terribly boring and their main selling points were how the player would want to play each and every one of the 100+ quests and how DeathSpank is such a lolleriffic character to play as.

But Toaster, at over 100 quests, think of the value! And who wouldn't want a funny character to play as! It's all about having fun and not being so serious about the vidya!

A number of the reviews DID state that toward the end, the quests (pretty much just fetch quests) do begin to get tedious, and I can imagine that being the case.

One of the reviews also stated that this is the first game in a long time where you actually WANT to talk to each and every NPC.

The guys that made this came up making old point and click adventure stuff, and while the humor is not to the level of, say, Psychonauts, at least from the demo, it seemed fairly amusing.

I'm sorry I was so critical earlier, Perversion. I really do hope this is the video game equivalent of Hotel Foxtrot for you!

                    A kinder, gentler John Mora??

And I was only comparing the two as a point of reference. Because you know as well as I do that the ONLY downloadable game that actually MATTERS to me will be Journey when that is released. Everything else, it's just biding my time.

I picked this game up and it is a blast. Quirky dialogue and the pretty cool stylization of graphics is awesome.
