No, people who pay companies to only invest 3 hours of gameplay is what is wrong with this industry. There is nothing complex about their engine or coding, (graphically it looks amazing), but there is no reason why many free flash games can provide more than 3 hours of gameplay for free, when companies release games that only provide a sliver of playable time. I am a consumer just like you and everyone else that buys a product, I am not going to pay $10 for a 3 hour video game, when there are several other games out there that cost the same and provide more.

A game doesnt have to be long to be great. Some games wouldnt work being very long. I think this is one of those cases.

                Re: Limbo

And you can add Portal and Flower to that list.

I think if you are judging a game by a dollars spent vs playtime/length ratio, and refuse to purchase a game because it does not give you an "equitable" ratio, then I agree with Toaster. Hell, I agree with Toaster anyway. If a game has 20 hours of decent gameplay and 40 hours of filler, and costs $60 new, that's a $1 per hour ratio. If a game has a 12 hour campaign, and "unlimited" online multiplayer, how would you figure out the worth of that?

If a game is only 10 hours long, has no multiplayer, costs $60 brand-new, but has zero downtime or filler, and is generally regarded as stellar, would the $6 per hour ratio dissuade you from buying it?

So, if this game is 3 hours long, but ends up being one of the best downloadable games of the year, would a $15 price (I'm guessing that'll be the pricepoint) dissuade you from buying it, as it comes out to $5 per hour?

Are you beginning to see how ludicrous it is to base your decisions on the perceived "value" of a game?

When was 15 bucks expensive for a video game, anyway?

It is when it is only 3 hours of gameplay. I am not asking for a free game, but for 3 hours of gameplay, I would be willing to pay $5. You guys can think it is a dumb move, but the more people pay companies to get away with things, the more they will do it. I am sure its a great game, but the creative minds behind it could have put more than 3 hours of gameplay into it if they really wanted to.

A game, in my opinion, is an investment. An investment that the amount of money I put in, will be worth while in the end. If I put $10, which yes, it is a lot when you are living on loans and going to college, then I expect the game to have a lot more meat to it than a beautiful platformer that can only muster 3 hours of puzzles. Long gone is the day where games like Abe's Odyssey was ahead of its time, where puzzles, depth, and game length all factored into a great product.

But you haven't played it, it could be the most mindblowing 3 hours of your life.

I figure the less stuff there is in there, the more focus they can put on making what is in there high caliber.

                        Re: Limbo

If the developers decided that three hours is the optimum length to tell the story or get across what they needed to, gameplay-wise, to me, this is far more preferable to adding another three hours of filler just to make it a better "value."

                          Re: Limbo

If three hours is what it took to give the experience they wanted to, then adding any more time to it would probably ruin the game completely.

Portal is a 3 hour game. Give or take AN HOUR.

                            BAM.
