    "Let's Play <Console Game>" (Recommendations?)

    I'm looking into making a Let's Play but the only problem is I'm a bit uninformed of what's out there and what I need. Since I haven't been active in a while, I haven't found any topics related to what kind of equipment I may need for better quality. If their already is a topic somewhere from a while ago, I apologize but I did look around a bit.

    I have a capture device called a Dazzle...which allows me to record directly from my screen as I'm playing. Issue seems to be that it is only limited to standard RCA. I'd like to be able to record and upload in Composite, or possibly (unlikely) in High-Def. I'd also like to play in HD while it records it in comparable quality but I think I may have to settle for less, there.

    I made a vid already with it and while it isn't bad...it isn't exactly great, quality-wise. (Though embarassing, since I haven't played the game in a while)

    But....anyone have any advice? If anyone needs any specific hardware info, I will try to share that too. I'd really appreciate it, guys.

        I would highly recommend Shadowrun for the Sega Genesis. If you cannot find a copy, then Fallout 1 & 2 for the PC are good fun, not only to play, but also to watch.

            Composite and RCA are the same thing, at least in the way you are referring to them.

            I think you want something that uses component, which can transmit up to 1080i. Technically, those are also still RCA cables.

            I just bought a Hauppauge 1212 from Amazon a few days ago.

            Using this, I can do the rest of my RPGM3 commentary in high def, and make capturing in the right format a lot easier. I might do some other video game captures, but if I do, they are not gonna be full-on Let's Plays.


            Oh, and as well, I need to do some capture for my contest game.

                Explain why you think the video you linked to is poor quality. It's not high-def, but IMO, it still looks pretty darn good. Why not stick with what you have?

                I might also suggest trying out Viddler instead of YouTube. No limit on video length, which makes it great for let's plays. Just gotta make sure your video is less than 500MB, which will probably only be an issue if you go high-def, or choose to save the video in some memory hog of a format.

                That said, what game should you play? Well, it kinda depends on various factors, but I'm just going to say to go with a game you're really good at. Do you have a favorite game? If you want a specific game recommended, though, go with Conker: Live and Reloaded on Xbox. (Or, you could, you know, do an RPG Maker game. :P)

                  I would recommend knowing the game you're going to play like the back of your hand.

                  I knew JA2, X-COM, and FO2 really well and still failed to get very far in a let's play.

                  Although X-COM was due to my new PC being unwilling to run the DOS version, otherwise that **** would got done.

                    Way of the Samurai 1, 2, then/or 3. With the best ending for each.

                        Sorry it took me so long to write back, I had to deal with some chick with her drama crap. Anyway, since I'm playing Way of the Samurai 3 (religiously)...I am going for that at the moment. Once I got back into the swing of things I'm doing A LOT better with the controls (though any improvement at all doesn't say much, I was awful there. Haha). Edit: Oh, and I don't have the previous two titles anymore, but that's a good idea. I could probably get them pretty cheap online.

                        I'm thinking of trying to get all of the endings for the game before I move on to something else. I appreciate the suggestions, advice and everything. Thanks Perversion, particularly because you gave me input on what I really needed.

                        Dray, I watched the vid again and while the quality doesn't look all that bad, you can't see dialogue. I could probably live with that but I was mostly curious if it could be improved. Thank you though.

                        I don't want to rely on annotations. I'm trying to use a mic but I'm a bit flustered as to how that would sych with a laptop while recording a console game. I foresee a latency effect occuring. Currently, I'm looking into how that's done.

                            That's because Xbox 360 developers expect everyone in the world to have HDTVs, now. Little do they know how untrue this is. Actually, I'd be suprised if that tiny text is much easier to read even with HDTV. Like playing a game boy with the system held away from your face. But I digress.

                            You're worried about latency? Expect it, even with a PC. I've found that it depends on the formats of the video and audio recordings, and the program you're using to edit them together. You'll probably want to experiment some.

                              Yeah, I'm even playing on an HDTV...but yeah, the text is scrunched and blurred. But I guess if that's the case, they are just going to have to deal with it.

                              Edit: I kind of expected I was going to deal with latency and that will just have to do then. Otherwise I may end up using annotations.
