Did that actually work for DDO?

How do they generate enough money based solely on software sales to keep the servers going and introduce new content periodically, as pretty much any MMO has to do in order to stay current? Are there other microtransaction elements that give them a continuing source of revenue, or is the general upkeep cost of a MMO simply less than I expected it to be?

Yes, DDO has all sorts of 'em.
Also, LOTRO is made by the same people so this isn't entirely unexpected.

I suppose not, if it worked for DDO. Perhaps this is the best way to try and live in a genre where one game rules with an iron fist.
