    Vehicular Assault!

Someone asked me about my ride in the Sex and the City thread, and it got me thinking that most people are at least moderately attached to their wheels, and I for one would be interested to hear what everyone's driving and how they feel about it. Love your car? Hate it? Treat it simply as a way to get from point A to point B? Let's hear it.

Oh, and if there already was a thread for this, my bad. Didn't know what this forum's policy was on thread necromancy. Also, quicker to type this than search to look it up.

    Two cars:

1986 Mercedes Benz 300 SDL: I obtained this car for $1,200. It is quite capable of handling all the abuse I throw at it, even with more than 215,000 miles on it. When available, waste fryer oil can be used to run the diesel engine, although it is somewhat hard to find and takes a lot of time to prepare. It does 0-60 mph ~11 seconds, but accelerates fast in the 45-90 mph range(about like a car that does 0-60 mph in 7 seconds), and has been more than double the legal speed limit, at least when the turbo was still working. Now I'm waiting on a part to arrive so I an fix the turbo. It returns around 30 mpg at 70 mph, 18 mpg in city driving, and 40 mpg at 50 mph. It likes being thrashed around, and is good fun finding random intersections to start doing donuts and burnouts in.

1969 Triumph GT6: Not yet operational. Battery electric race car in progress.

Whoa, serious road warrior. While I have great affection for my '96 Thunderbird, I've never been into actually modifying it in any way aside from taking out the tape deck and putting in a CD player. How much did you put into it with the turbo and all? Or is that standard? Don't know much about Mercedes.

My car is a 2000 Jetta TDI. Gotta say, I love it for the great gas mileage. However, I hate driving- so it kind of evens itself out.

You need to buy a chip for that thing... you could easily get another 30-40 horsepower out of it, and modify the governor as well; 150 mph might be within reach.

1991 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. I both love and hate it. If it was in better condition it would be more of a love. Damn thing would be gorgeous if it wasn't for some body damage. I had to replace the transmission recently, which has put it on my bad side.

I don't have a car. I usually just walk or get a ride with my friends.

                      Re: Vehicular Assault!

I have a cursed 2005 pontiac grand prix. Smooth ride and I love the space and how the dash is designed around me.

But in the past year and a half that I've owned it:

-slid into car in front of me (this one's my fault).
                      -power steering pump broke.
-thermostat broke, which lead to entire heater core being clogged, which meant no heat for entire last winter
-had some drunk dude walk into the side of my car while I was driving 35 mph on the way home one night, sheared the mirror right off which ricocheted into my windshield and punched right through it, sending glass into my face.
-had an old mercedes back into it while parked
-while at a ****ing nature conservatory hike some little ****ers decided it'd be cool to smash in the taillight lens.
-finally all the dings parking for two school years at a public university will get you.

                      No wonder Pontiac went under!

Before that, my first car was a mitsubishi galant beater. The pulley for the water heater/power steering belt was cracked and that caused that belt to slip a few times, and the alternator was dead when I got it, but I fixed all those myself and never had a problem with it til the ****** finally went while I was trying to pass this ancient as hell volvo going like 20 mph on a major road...I guess he had the last laugh as the douche trying to pass him sputtered onto the side of the road and stayed there.

2001 Nissan Sentra. It gets about 30 miles to the gallon, which i like, since i have to fill up every 3 days. Its not the most powerful car, but it does what i need it to do. Paint is starting to fade (which appears to be a trend with this car), and the ****** had to be replaced back in April 2007 (thankfully, it was still under an extended warranty i put on the car), so now i treat it a bit more gingerly, but i fear the transmission is gonna go again, so i'm trying to save up for the fix when/if that happens.

To the no car people, do you live in a city and thus have the ability to function normally without a vehicle, or do you just not have the means or desire to own one? Because unless you're a youngling, going through life without proper mobility seems like a hassle.

I drive a 2008 Mazda 6 and I LOVE it. Its an automatic transmission but has a manual option which is nice in the winter.

This isn't my exact car but its the same one:

Its a pretty nice car. Lots of room for the family, good on gas but it still has balls when needed.
