    Dragon Quest IX

We finally have a release date, and confirmation that multiplayer will be local only, squashing any possibility that the game will have the sort of popularity experienced in Japan. Great.

Alright! I can't wait to gather up my friends so we can sit around on the couch and play a 60 hour RPG together!

Oh, wait, none of my friends would ever agree to that.

Also no one I know owns a DS or would have any interest in Dragon Quest.

Oh, and I don't live in Tokyo.

This was one of the games I had been considering when deciding what handheld system to get a while back; if I had a DS, this would be a first-day purchase, no question. Had no idea it'd be this long in getting released.

All of my friends have DSes... but, uh... none of them have ever played Dragon Quest before to my knowledge.

I mean, we DID play Dokopon Kingdom for a little bit, but that's 'cause you could play with a single cart.

Dragon Quest, as we all know is about tradition.

The tradition being that the series is ridiculously popular in Japan and no one else in the world cares.

Really, according to this article there's no random battles (!), and the characters are fully customizable. That really breaks a lot of JRPG traditions, so they got to keep one of the series' traditions in place.

Serously, though it does sound like an interesting game. Dragon Quest is one of the few series that manages the traditional JRPG formula well, and Level 5 is a pretty good developer (and they did an excellent job on DQVIII).

Also, did that article really need to have that many pictures of a slime? Don't we all know what those things look like by now?

I think DQ 8 actually did decent outside of Japan as well. Hence why they gave Level 5 the go ahead for 9, no doubt.

I got a Popo vibe from it, what with the zoom increasing so that eventually all you could see were those round (and totally drawn by the same artist) eyes.

I reeeeeeeeeeeally wanted to experience DQIX the way it was meant to be played, but now that I can't, I don't know that I'll bother getting it at all.

I lost interest way back when they first announced it was local only. Back when that first FFCC game on DS dropped online. Then the next one not only had online play but cross platform with Wii. But by then I didn't care anymore.

That's cause everyone was interested in the FFXII demos I think

Actually though, I think SE did a decent job of promoting the game. It also helped that they added some features to make it more appealing to a non-Japanese audience (they added voice acting, an orchestral soundtrack, and added the menus).

You're probably right, though ironically I played both at the same time and enjoyed DQ 8 a lot more. FF 12 was OK, but was basically just a Knights of the Old Republic knockoff.
