It was a good run.

Since they're adding one, it's just a push. Still three of them floating around out there, allowing every comedic actor in Hollywood a chance to play a creep for one episode before either getting pinched or killed.
Wait, they added another one besides this one, SVU, and CI?

Yup. Law and Order: Los Angeles. Guess the success NCIS had with that area lured them in.

The appeal of L&O, at least to me, was the gritty setting of New York and the cynical and hardened types who dwell within (Jerry Orbach's death pretty much numbered the days remaining for the original series). L.A. doesn't even compare. The first time I see the detectives questioning the murder victim's personal trainer, my interest will go flying out the window.

I guess they were limited as to just how much more they could do with NYC. You have the original L&O, the two spinoffs currently going (CI and SVU), that Trial By Jury that flared out quick....unless they were going into Law and Order: Meter Maids, the Big Apple was more or less tapped.
Of course, you could ask why they're feeling the need to do another one at all, but don't ask that. it's a silly question.

I liked the original, and the earlier SVU episodes.

As long as they still got SVU I'm okay. It's just about the only thing I really remind myself to watch.

I don't think it'll go anywhere. I know an article about the TV ratings a couple years ago said that while the original and CI were shedding viewers, SVU was gaining. No idea if it's still true, but I wouldn't doubt it. I think everyone just enjoys the massive irony of Ice T (Ice T! "Cop Killer' Ice-T!) playing a cop. I know I do.

I've always hated this show. My mother used to watch it so much it drove me crazy, the opening narration is forever burned in my mind.

Aren't there like ten spin-offs?
I've watched that show a few times.
It was okay.
The one with Vincent D'onofrio sucked though, cuz they always showed who did it in the middle, so there's no mystery anymore on the viewer's part.

I think what I'm going to miss the most is the original's theme music. Pretty good stuff, and makes the other themes feel unnecessarily overblown.

I'm a big fan of SVU and also enjoy the original. Never got into CI. The many shifting main characters of classic L&O has made it hard to keep involved. The one great actor that stuck around was... the black lady who had cancer. And I read not long ago she didn't want to do another season so I'm find with the show ending now.

Honestly I think Jack McCoy was the only thing that was still decent about the show; and they could just as easily write him into SVU or CI.
It does seem a really strange choice they didn't let it last another year, though; if only to break Gunsmoke's record.

Wasn't the show supposed to be more focused on the criminals to begin with, and less on the police?

I never understood the appeal of these shows.

I rather like Law & Order, and i'm with Karim, i'm surprised they didnt let it go ONE more season, that way it could have been the longest running non-animated tv series of all time.

There's not really any money in getting that record. By killing the OG and bringing in a new spinoff they can get largely the same ratings while paying far less to the actors, since they haven't been around for decades playing the part.

The first time I see the detectives questioning the murder victim's personal trainer, my interest will go flying out the window.
I actually saw an episode of Law & Order where that happened... an actress died, and they suspected her personal trainer... they had to keep flying out to LA to interrogate him, and it was a 3-episode story arc... of course I was watching it in syndication so I only saw 1 of 3. Still frustrated over that.
I'll miss Law & Order, but SVU is my favourite anyway, and yes, Orbach dying definitely caused it to lose a lot of its shine.
I remember when I was sick from school for a month when I was 10... my mom always kicked me off the couch after lunch to go upstairs. She was watching Law & Order. I finally whined enough for her to let me watch it... I'll never forget that 1st episode I watched.. it was from the famous storyline of a girl cutting off her cheating spouse's penis. As he was yelling, "She cut it off! Crazy ***** cut it off" my mom turned to me and was like, "Don't you dare tell anyone I let you watch this" ha ha ha

Law & Order, and virtually all other crime/medical/whatever procedurals, can die in a fire for all I care. Fringe is the only procedural I watch, because at least it has an interesting/original story arc.

I dunno, I enjoy watching Law and Order if it happens to be on the TV. Not a crazy fan or anything.

Was that a jibe at my posts being formulaic, or have I professed deep love for procedurals in the past? \:3

I don't watch any of them regularly (except for Criminal Minds, before I got a regular show on Wednesday that I don't get home from until after 10), but sometimes they're good for something simple to have on while on the computer or doing something else. Formulaic, but still capable of the occasional interesting episode, and not something you have to focus on too hard.

Jerry Orbach really made the show. Once he left and, soon after, died, the show kind-of died with him.
Thankfully it won't stop TNT from playing 8 episodes a day. I do rate Law and Order from when Orbach was around to be one of my top shows.
