View Full Version : Would anyone like some emergency surgery?

Me neither, but I just had some.

For about 4 days I was having stomach cramps, but I thought it was indigestion, gas, constipation...I didn't know, but I assumed it was nothing. On about the 4th day though, I started thinking food poisoning just because it had been so long.

Friday afternoon it became unbearable, and I went to the ER. That was some of the worst pain I've ever felt, and I've passed kidney stones. They did a catscan, and found a ruptured appendix. I pretty much had to have surgery right then.

I got out of the hospital yesterday, and already things are mildy crappy.

First of all, I was told by three different people that I had butterfly sutures, and that they would wear off on their own. I took a shower (finally), the bandages came off, and I found staples underneath. So while I'm addled from pain medication and lack of sleep, I have to find the right number to call to find out the procedure for those.

Then, I have 3 scrips. One for pain, and 2 antibiotics. I hurt well pretty much a lot, so I take the pain medication...which also makes me nauseous. What I usually do for that is drink some milk or eat some yogurt, but I can't do that while I'm taking antibiotic number 1...which also gives me volcanic heartburn. I ALSO can't take any antacids, because they contain calcium, which I can't have while taking a-biotic 2. I have to take 1 a-biotic 3 times a day, and one twice, and I have to find the time to take my pain meds or be miserable. If I take them and they make me nauseous enough to puke, there goes 1 or both of my antibiotics. I have to time everything on a rigid schedule and that's NEVER been my strong point, even when I'm not on drugs.

I'll be ok though. I'll just have to be in pain sometimes or have heartburn sometimes, but I HAVE to take my antibiotics. Those will be over in a week, along with the staples.

I can't sit for long, and getting up is a *****. I stand and sleep. Those are my 2 positions. I won't be posting much for about a week or so. Sorry for the Hemmingway-esque war correspondent style, but YEAH.

Wow! That's terrible, but I'm really glad you got it spotted in time to have the appendectomy done, that may have saved your life.

I think they have the probiotics (which will lessen that feeling of "I've been nuked" nausea) available in pill form (as opposed to in yogurt where they're usually found) so if it's the yogurt itself that causes the clash, maybe you could take this instead?

Otherwise, just do your best and remember that from here on the medicine course will only get better with time.

Emergency surgery is fun, the soreness is just the battle wounds!

What painkiller did they give you? I was given percocet and was stoned for a day straight afterward.

That's horrible! I'm glad they found it in time and that you're on the road to recovery. Much love and hugs from Canadar, buddy!

I would indeed like some emergency surgery, in the event that I actually required it.

May you have a swift and as-painless-as-possible recovery...

Believe me, I'm exceedingly grateful. Everyone involved treated me fantastically except for 2 doctors. I don't know whether 'domestic partnership' flipped their trigger or if 'indigent care' did...or if they're just assholes all the time, but those two were unique in their suckiness.

I just didn't want to NEED emergency surgery, is all.

Glad you're okay, close call on that one.

I grew up having a huge fear of appendicitis... every time my stomach hurt, I would panic. Mind you, I would come home Friday nights as a kid and gorge on junk food, then panic a few hours later.

I begged them to take mine out when they were in there getting my gallbladder. I rationlized that it would prevent me from having to come back for more emergency surgery but they didn't listen. So far so good though, Appendix and I are still BFF.

I hope you stay that way, girlie.

And thanks, all of you.

Getting the staples out yesterday was NOT the huge boon that I was hoping it would be. I'm better, but I was hoping that the vast majority of my pain was due to the staples. Turns out it wasn't. :| I was like "What gives?" to the nurse who took the staples out, and she was like "UM...you just had an open appendectomy??"

It's true that after 2 weeks of pain I'm ready for it to be gone, but mostly I'm just sick of being unproductive. I can't do anything for long until I stop hurting. Which I will. Eventually.
