Perversion now has PC...Toshiba laptop

Instead of trying to save up enough to have a PC built for me and waiting and waiting, I've decided to just get (for the time being, anyway) an off-the-shelf laptop.

This is the one I'm leaning towards.


It's got an HDMI out, it's dual core, it's got 3 gigs of RAM (expandable to 4), and has a 2.1 Ghz processor speed.


Anyone that knows something about PeeCees, can you see any major downsides to this one? I looked on Amazon, and it was priced higher than we sell it for, plus I get my associate discount.

That isn't very impressive. My gf got an ASUS desktop at Best Buy for cheaper and it had better specs.

Staples has been having sales on Compaq laptops for the past few weeks. Joe just got himself one that was way better than the comparable (yet inferior) models he'd been seeing all over town, and it was also $100 less than those. I can't remember the actual stats of the machine he got, but I know the processor was faster than the one you mentioned, and the RAM was the same. I think he paid $500 for it, and that price was $120 off the retail.

Any laptop you could get that's cheaper than a desktop won't be worth much. Is it really that hard to save up for a desktop if you can afford all those home theater components?

For playing movies and surfing the internets, the first computer seems fine.

Yes. That's all spent money by this point. I do have some money saved up in a CD bearing next to no interest, so I'm thinking about yanking a portion of it out to buy a PC and some other odds and ends (one more speaker mount, some decent speaker wire, probably a Hauppage capture card/external capture device). Wanna leave SOME money in the CD, so don't really want to blow half of it on a PC.


Okay, here's the other thing...after doing that rendering last night (at 512 MB of RAM), all I really want is something where I'm not gonna be hunched over a desk for hours on end. With 3 gigs of RAM and a laptop, the hours and the hunching won't be a problem.


I do not have room for a desk in my living area. I'd be constantly using a wireless mouse sans mousepad and a wireless keyboard. The laptop just seems to be the better option. And all I really am going to be using it for is recording audio, possibly doing some video capture (a Hauppage external could do this as well), and render video. With 3 gigs of RAM, rendering doesn't seem like it'll be that big of an issue.


Oh, and most importantly, I need to be able to use IG Maker software, which again should not be an issue. The only real reason I wanted to build my own PC was for the HDMI capability for the video and a toslink connection for the audio. But I can forego the latter if it'll get me a decent laptop to do pretty much exclusively those three things listed.

Just buy a tower and a wireless keyboard with a touch pad like this. Hook the tower up to one of your TVs.

Laptops are not worth it if you're going to be using the computer primarily in your house. If you're not taking it on the go on a regular basis, do not get the laptop. They get hot, they're more expensive, they're less powerful, upgrade options are limited/non-existent, etc.

Now I have a question for you:

My TV is hooked up to my cable box through an HDMI cable. For some reason, when I put on a HD channel with stereo sound, the sound will only play for about 10 seconds-3 minutes and then abruptly die. If I change to an SD channel with stereo sound, there are no problems. Also, if I put on an HD channel with surround sound output, there are no problems.

It's not the cable box. I've tried using my roommate's box and had the same problem. Should I return the TV? Or could it be the HDMI cable?

I have a Satellite too, L455 (don't know the differences, except that mine had 250 gigs memory instead of 500). Picked it up a couple months ago because the EEE PC my boss gave me for work was annoying me too much.

Did yours actually run what the website said it did?

I got it for $80 less with my employee discount, plus free shipping. Ordered it Friday night, and it was on my front porch earlier today.
