RPG's - what do you hate most about them? - what would you like to see?

For me its boring boss fights that are nothing more than ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK, HEAL, ATTACK, ATTACK, HEAL, etc.

At my advanced age, I don't care as much for some deep, intricate storyline as for some depth with character building.

I lose interest too quickly a lot of the time in games, or play them sporadically (play for a bit, put it down, pick it back up a few months later, etc). Which is why for someone like myself, games like Etrian Odyssey and Demon's Souls are much more engaging than something like a latter-day FF or something like DA:O or Mass Effect. I don't like playing a game pretty hardcore for a short stretch if it hooks me and makes me want to keep playing, then by necessity needing to set it down for a bit, only to come back a few (weeks, months) later, and having no clue what I'm supposed to be doing, and only having a very vague recollection of the characters and storyline.

So then there are really three options: First, just start where I left off and muddle my way through until I can figure out what I'm supposed to be doing; second, restart with a different save file, which will probably get me only as far as I did the previous time; or third, just decide not to play it.

I usually end up going with the third choice.

The same character archetypes and stories recycled ad infinitum.

Most RPGs have gotten away from random battles but they were the worst thing about the genre for a long time.

And you know what really grinds my gears? Grinding. I don't want to have to engage in a bunch of boring battles with the same old enemies in order to get strong enough to move on to bigger and better ones.

Also money was pretty useless since I hardly ever bought anything. All the best equipment and gear would show up in chests right after you spent your money. And I'd use healing magic over healing items. Chances are I'd get to rest before I ran out of MP.

My main complaint, the lack of stories/settings outside of the medieval/fantasy genre, has mostly been addressed in the past 3 years. There are RPGs like Fallout 3, Persona 3/4, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, and the like which have filled that need.

I agree with Mora's complaint as my main one now.

I also want to see better balance; I think it would be interesting to see an RPG where all of your equipment continues to have uses, instead of your initial equipment simply being cast aside when better equipment becomes available. I would also like character stats to deviate very slightly from the start of the game to max level, so that the game's initial enemies can still pose a threat; this would necessitate one or two stat points making a huge difference. This would also necessitate a large degree of strategy on part of the player. I'm working on a game that does this, in fact, although details won't be forthcoming for a while; I want it that way.

Despite my love for Fallout 3 and my extreme dislike for FFXIII, I still much prefer the JRPG style. I think a happy medium between Western RPGs and JRPGs in terms of gameplay style and linearity can indeed be found. No one, to my knowledge, has achieved this balance yet. This would probably entail a linear story with 20+ branching paths and would be a lot of work(especially to keep all of the characters well developed as JRPGs are known for while allowing all of the open-endedness of Western RPGs), but it would be an interesting and welcomed development.

I don't play JRPGs anymore. I own a few I have barely even touched. Dragon Quest VIII has never been out of it's case, I stopped Persona 3 when I got to the tower thing. FFXII, I dont even remember where I got to in that before putting it aside. There's probably others I'm forgetting too. Oh, wait. Valkyria Chronicles. got to the point where you can build your unit or whatever and stopped.

I blame Mass Effect for changing my perception of what a good RPG is forever. Thank you, Urdnot Wrex.

I think FFXII almost striked that perfect balance between western and eastern rpg's. It could just use alot less grinding.

Do the Negalmurr loop and come back to your party in a few days. Grinding be gone! ;3

In an RPG, I like to have as much customization as possible that allow me to to pursue lots of different play styles.

I hate the recycled characters, love triangles, and repetitive battle system that never really amounts to anything.

I am unaware of this... I have a file 40 hours in, but it's been too long!

As long as you have characters ~lvl 30, you can do the Negalmurr trick. Look it up on GameFAQs.

When the creators make the story the focus of the game.

It's a video game, not a Dostoyevsky novel. It's fun when the game has an entertaining story, but I don't want to sit through hours of FMVs and cutscenes.

Shakespeare did not write novels. He wrote plays.

Yeah, I mis-typed. Thanks for that important correction.
