Suddenly, their callous and arrogant attitude toward IW makes perfect sense, because you know even though this was just announced today, it had been in the works for some time.
Just like there's a court battle brewing over the Modern Warfare IP. Activision owns the CoD name, but if I'm not mistaken, IW owns the Modern Warfare name.
Granted, this is most likely Bungie making nice and being extremely complimentary in the face of controversy, but it gives me hope that this will not eventually turn into IW part two.
Not that I really care about CoD, MW, or Halo, or really any of the games these devs will eventually end up putting out, but I really do not like seeing devs get knifed in the back by their corporate overlords.
Westwood was entirely an RPG and Adventure game company before EA popped up and said "Lol, Command and Conquer only."
What's surprising isn't so much the 10 year deal but Microsoft actually letting one of their most profitable franchises go. Maybe Microsoft realized the Halo brand would only grow weaker or perhaps they're putting everything they have behind Alan Wake but it wouldn't be inaccurate to say they could offer double what Activision offers.
I'm just sad to think about a talented company getting the shaft down the road when they demand the billions of dollars in royalties they deserve and Activision is like "Yeah, you're fired for insubordination. See ya."
Not gonna happen. If you click my link above, you'll see that they are still an independent studio. They will own the IP of whatever project they'll work on for this next decade, and being independent, Activision is ONLY publishing. They have no power to hire or fire employees. The most they can do is sue for breach of contract if one of the games starts running behind schedule or over budget.
Bungie is their own entity. Oh, and they became independent from Microsoft back in 2007. The interview I linked to above is actually fairly interesting in terms of the business aspects and how this deal played out.
