So now schools are spying on their students at home...

    Oh my god...

...Schools actually issue computers to their students?! Wow, my school was way too poor for that!

this is quite serious, this easily crosses into child porn with the type of access that can be granted. how can the school board not realize the potential and so easily abused nature of this software and its employees?

      very disturbing.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

This is why I hate webcams. I feel like somebody is always watching me unless I cover it up or unplug it or some thing.

Wish I could, by computer dims every time I cover up the built-in cam.

It is a perfectly rational fear considering that the potential for this is there.

Yeah, this is absurd, and I don't even think it's the first time this has happened: I remember hearing last month that a student was suspended for inappropriate behavior at home when a this same kind of school-sponsored spycam computer taped him as the administrators watched!

Anyone responsible for the decision to allow spycams to EVER be used against students should be sacked, if not outright thrown in jail. But it's not going to happen, because students seem to have no rights beyond protection from physical abuse.

I'm wondering why the schools are buying private laptops for each kid anyway. Is this the best use of their money? I'm not a big fan of school vouchers, but how about laptop vouchers for each family with a kid in the school instead?

Technically it's the school's property, so that's kinda why they can do it. It is still a huge breach in privacy and the school has no right to do it. Still, I only use the computer completely naked on Tuesdays.

According to our government under Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, and ever since, the constitutional rights of America's children end inside school property, thanks to the "zero tolerance policy." This has since been used to justify or set the precident for all sorts of egregious abuses and absurd scenarios(eg. a 1st grader being expelled for bringing a butter knife in her lunch box to spread peanut butter).

This is just another outrageous example of the things the world's most overpriced school system does on a regular basis.

The children certainly are being exploited, but in a very unobvious way.

They are being used as justification for increasing school funding, but without that funding actually going to providing what the student needs. Often in schools today, students are subjected to repeated advertisements from whatever company offers the school funding, sometimes not allowed to opt out(often with mandatory home room periods where such things are shown to them). Further, the schools themselves are charged far too much for things such as desks, textbooks, and computers, to the point where a $50 item ends up costing the taxpayers 10x more or higher, nevermind the wide cost gap in the price to produce school lunches versus what taxpayers are charged(the contractors get rich at taxpayer and student expense). It doesn't help matters that despite all of the money thrown at public schools, that the teachers are grossly underpaid while those high in the heirarchy get salaries exceeding 6x what the typical teacher earns(hint: want to attract more teachers? PAY THEM MORE). Then there is the issue of some schools throwing all of their money towards sports.

To further exacerbate matters, funding is dependent on district. If the rich school districts with more money than they knew what to do with had to share with the low income districts their funding, there would almost overnight be a complete overhaul in the efficiency with which the money is spent and a large reduction in property taxes because of all of the complaints that would follow from the upper middle class neighborhoods.

The United States spends more per student on education than any other country on Earth, yet their public schools with regard to math/science are lagging behind nations like Vietnam, Slovenia, and Bulgaria... that spend an order of magnitude less per student per year on education.

With schools more resembling prisons and military detention centers than actual places to learn in the U.S., it is little wonder that students behave likewise. The schools have become overpriced daycare centers where students are subject to propaganda and taught obedience to authority, rather than institutions of learning where they actually learn at bare minimum the 3 Rs(this is especially true in South Texas... *blech*). It's little wonder why so many people have dropped out, especially in low income neighborhoods.

                              this isnt right-
1- spying- of any kind- is illegal.
2-Wat if the kids parents ALLOW the kid to watch porn?
                              Truth stretched,
                              Lies told,
                              Heart of shadows;
                              Not of gold.
