Someone help me remember this book.

I don't remember much about it, but it was a picture book that my teachers would always read in elementary school to students.

What I do remember is that it was full of like photos or something, and either the author or the person who had taken the photos had gone missing before the book was made.

I just kinda remembered something else, I think the author had gone missing before publishing the book, and someone else published it for him and kind of integrated him going missing into the story or something.

I vaguely remember this story. It was like an elementary English project-- some illustrator made a series of pictures but "something happened to him" before an accompanying story could be written.

There was an assignment to write a short story about one of the pictures. I recall one was of a living room with a surreal lump in the wall. One was a book--or a child holding a book--with vines emerging from the pages. That's all I recall. And those details are too vague to pull up anything from google.

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg, the author of Jumanji, The Polar Express, and other wonderful illustration books.

A fictional editor's note tells of an encounter with an author and illustrator named Harris Burdick, who provided the images and captions as samples, each from a different picture book he had written. He left with a promise to deliver the complete manuscripts if the editor chose to buy the books. Burdick was never seen again, and the samples are all that remain of his supposed books

Yes that's it! The ones I really remember are the ones with the lump in the floor and the vines growing out of the book.

We had to write stories in order to finish one of the captions, I chose the one with the lump.
