    Metro 2033

Flying under the radar, as usual. From the people that made STALKER.

The game is played from the perspective of a character named "Artyom". The story takes place in post-apocalyptic Moscow, mostly inside the metro system where the player's character was raised (he was born before the war, in an unharmed city), but occasionally the player has to go above ground on certain missions and scavenge for valuables.
Am I the only one that picked this up? Its great so far. Its like if Silent Hill and Fallout made babies.

Very atmospheric and spooky, stealth elements are fun for the most parts too.

I dunno. STALKER's penguin walk made me very dizzy and it just seemed cheaply made.

The penguin walk isn't in this(thank god). The guys that made this broke off from the Stalker developers.

Its based off a Book of the same name, and is very faithful(read: Good) to it. The bullets as currency is also very cool, and i wish Fallout would steal it.

I did hear a 1Up podcast about this that made it sound pretty interesting. Something about a bullet economy?

And about STALKER's unfortunate shortcomings, are there any mods or anything that fixes them?

STALKER has more mods then you can shake a stick at, google it.

'military grade' ammo is essentially money, but also does double damage if used in a weapon.

Ammo is actually scarce too, I was willy nilly early in the game and ended up knifing some giant rats.

Yeah...saw this come in at work last week or whatever, and it looked kinda low-budget direct to budget bin.

Read a review on Gamespot a few days later, and my interest was piqued. Seemed as if it was average graphically, and the gameplay does get a bit repetitive, but the atmosphere and concept are worth looking past its shortcomings.

As a side note, does anyone else peruse Gamespot for reviews, and can you usually guess within .5 of a rating point what score they give a game before the page even loads? I'm pretty good with that. Almost every game that I click the link to the review, I can call almost dead on what the score is gonna be.

THEN AGAIN, IF YOU GUESS 7 OR 7.5, YOU'LL BE RIGHT 9 OUT OF TEN TIMES ANYWAY OLOL.

                  Re: Metro 2033

What penguin walk are you talking about?

I've been playing Metro 2033 on and off since it came out and I just can't get into it for the following reasons...

                  1) I was expecting an open world RPG like STALKER. Instead I got a linear corridor shooter. This isn't inherently a bad thing but far from my expectations.

                  2) There's absolutely no tension in the game. The graphics and atmosphere are good but the AI is rock dumb (humans slowly strafe around while monsters bee line at you) and there's no build up to the monsters. They chill in a corner until they spot you at which point they lumber over and attack. STALKER's mutants would engage you based on their individual AI and bumping into a bloodsucker wandering an abandoned house or turning a corner and seeing a pack of psi-dogs circling around you was scary. This game, not so much.

                  3) Your field of vision is ****ed up. It's like you have blinders on and can't see passed a narrow scope. The PC version lets you modify this number but all it does is shrink your scope, not widen how much you can actually see.

                  4) 90% of the shotguns are garbage. You can literally hit something dead center and nothing happens. Since your health regenerates (you can also use medkits to speed it up) you can pretty much knife every monster with little problems because their patterns are SLOW SWING -> BACK OFF -> SLOW SWING -> BACK OFF. Some monsters jump around and dive in holes but all that does is give you more time to shoot them or heal.

                  5) The game just feels clunky although I'm spoiled by STALKER's controls which let me LEAN!!! The PC version is also pretty damn buggy, poorly optimized, and it took me an hour to figure out how to install the game because it crashes Steam (why are games still installing on Steam, Jesus Christ I BOUGHT THE EFFING CD I EXPECT A SELF-RUNNING EXECUTABLE) unless you install only the drivers it came with it.

The good parts? Well, it looks nice and I like how your gas mask can get cracked. That's about it, really. It's Doom 3 with a handful of stealth portions. For me, this game will be remembered as the decade's first disappointing purchase. Here's some screenshots I took...

Shotguns are terrible but I thought this was a pretty cool screen demonstrating the typical boring monster and condensation around the side of the screen.

Ruined Moscow would be so fun to explore like Pripyat was in STALKER but nope, this is a straight shooter folks.

The towns are visually neat and you can almost smell the pig flesh mixed with funk and vodka.

You can pretty much knife every monster because they have lethargic attack patterns and your health recharges.

Normally I play on a widescreen but almost every console to PC game flat out doesn't support it or sucks with it, BioShock 2 cutting off 30% of the screen instantly come to mind.

He's absolutely right, the shotgun is garbage. There's only three or four shot in the actual shells and they spread two feet from the barrel. Even if you're aiming dead center mass you won't hit anything five feet away from you. STALKER used simulated ballistics which frustrated a lot of people used to fast paced shooters but this game's ballistics are absolute garbage.

It makes sense considering the guns are home made in a chop shop but it's no less annoying. The pistol and pneumatic weapons are the best for damage and accuracy.
