I have a theory to what happened.
The main fella's girlfriend cheated on him with the Man in the Planet, causing the (obviously) alien/human hybred baby to be born (actually in a FULL term preganancy in this case, despite it being only three months). That's when Mary X attempts to get Henry (the main fella) to support her by making him think the baby's his. (I ready somewhere that the script WAS originally about infidelity.)
After the baby was born, its biological father when into it's head to watch over it.
The lady in the radiator is actually the ghost of a singer who now possessed said raidiator, seeking out victims with her siren song.
As for the rest of the strange crap...Well, clearly Henry is a drug addict or has been exposed to either gas from the raidiator released by the ghost or stuff from his job at a printing mill.
...And that is my theory.
