What exactly happened in Half Life?

    Mild Half Life 2 Spoilers

Alright, I'm very confused right now. I'm playing through Half Life 2 and
nothing is making sense. I played through Half Life a long time ago, but can't remember any of the story. The sequel starts out in this concentration camp like city ran by one of the scientists of Black Mesa... I have no idea what is going on, so can some one brief me on the events of the first Half Life?

    Aliens like attack and stuff.
The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

      Uhh, basically.

      --- half life spoilers??? ---
The scientists at Black Mesa accidentally open a portal to the world of Xen, unleashing havoc upon the compound. Most all of the personnel are killed. The military is sent in to quiet anyone who might still be alive (such as Gordon), and keep the whole thing under wraps, I suppose. Gordon is sent to Xen by some surviving scientists to destroy the "overmind" thing, which he does. Then, the G-Man (guy who was calmly walking around the compound) presumably explains that the government will take over Xen, or something. He gives Gordon the choice to either work for the powers that the G-Man works for, or die. I'm guessing HL2 follows the storyline of what happens to Gordon if he works with G-Man.

      --- end ---

I never understood how that would work. I guess they didn't intend to make a second game, like Robert Zmeckis with Back to the Future.

Supposedly Gordon killed the alien mastermind behind the disaster in the original, though that's not to say nothing happened with Blue Shift or Opposing force, neither of which I ever completed.

I have completed every Half Life game more than once, and you cannot truly claim to understand until you have played them.

I have completed every Half Life game more than once, and I don't think I paid any attention to the story each time.

Yeah. But I also have really bad story comprehension. I haven't understood the stories to any Final Fantasy...Ever. Or any anime for that matter. So it is not a surprise.

And you're right, the man on man action I engage in probably has something to do with it.

They pretty much just pulled a story out of their collective asseses in HL2.
"At first it just looked like a picture of a bunch of lily pads, but then I started scraping at it with my pocket knife and the whole painting just sort of spoke to me," Schmidt said. "For the first time, I finally understand what Monet was trying to get across in her work."
