And you guys thought MY walls o' text were bad...

Jesus Harold Christ on a pogo stick, Tim Rogers!

Sadly, I made it through the entire thing in pretty much one sitting (short of letting the cat upstairs and smoking a 3 minute cigarette on the porch).

If he hates Japan so much why does he still live and work there and play his guitar at the clubs there and **** his japanese idol girlfriend there and write a ****in' book on how awful it is? |||:V

But yeah, hey, look. It's this thread again.

Yes, Tim Rogers needs an editor.

I was skipping through it, not really reading it, until I got to the section on Japanese "comedy" and television.
It's not just comedy. Japan is land of the abundant "Famous For Being Famous" class of entertainers. If Paris Hilton were Japanese, they'd literally have her anchoring the ****ing national news. The most common TV show is a genreless, formless, gelatinous entertainment blog in which the Famous For Being Famous sit around a table and view video clips. The video clips expand to fill our entire TV screens; a picture-in-picture shows the faces of these Famous For Being Famous people as they react. They say things like "SUGOOOOI" when something impressive happens. They say "OMOSHIROOOOOI" when something is interesting. They say "OISHISOU!" when something looks delicious. Men say "UMAI!" immediately after taking a minuscule bite of food, sometimes before they even swallow, in this nasal voice, in a tone like they just ran up a flight of stairs.
Even that's enough to shut down the whole country.

Yeah, every other country's attempt at television is sort of pathetic.

Wow, that was one long rant. And yeah, he is coming off as kind of intolerant here. He's simply having trouble coming to terms with one of the biggest difference between Western and Eastern society: Western society generally and traditionally accepts individuality far more than Eastern society. Neither is better. On one hand, there are cultural mores which uphold's an individual's rights and dignity but take them too far and you get selfish narcissistic irresponsible jackasses who only give a **** about themselves. OTOH, there are cultures which respect things like tradition and social harmony, but at the cost of individuality because of a fear that it'll disrupt society as a whole.

From the way he describes it, it sounds like Japanese society is trying to emulate modern Western (or perhaps I should say global) society, but doesn't fully understand how it functions, and it trying to force it into traditional values.

It's a good thing he stuck a little paragraph in there about videogames otherwise I'd suspect him of using his position as editor to spout hate

isn't that essentially what's happening anyway?

                    in every country?
                    ...and that's why.

I hate it when I hear foreigners always talking about how great their home country is and how much better it is than Canada. Its like SO GO BACK THERE THEN.

I worked with a swiss chef once, and he was constantly talking about how great it was in switzerland. OH YOU WALK DOWN THE STREET EVERY MORNING AND SMELL THE FRESH BREAD! THE BEAUTIFUL SWISS WOMEN! BEST FOOD IN THE WORLD! BLAH BLAH BLAH! Its like so why'd you leave in the first place pal?

This is a really long way of saying "The language and cultural barriers are difficult".

Pretty much, yeah. He's probably just irritated he's not hobnobbing with a bunch of vegan non-smokers, and the strain is getting to him. I find it amusing that early he chose to compare life in Tokyo with San Francisco, as if the latter city were somehow a model of normalcy in the modern world.

I am also amused by the irony of Perversion needing a smoke to get through that monster rant.
