The port of the game was dumbed down significantly to the point that it wasn't really possible to get lost. Playing this game back in the day before the internet was one of those grueling things where you'd be lost for weeks trying to figure out where to go next and what to do based on the extremely unhelpful NPCs. Getting further in the game was like an accomplishment all its own, and beating it? ****ing amazing.
The GBC port was the game, without the challenge.

There were clues. The vaguest clues in existence, but they were there.
And did I say it was fun? It's an interesting game, one I really enjoyed playing, but only for the sheer difficulty in solving puzzles you were sometimes given almost no information on, or none at all and it was up to you to use a specific item or spell in every place that it might look like it could be used.
It's a fairly typical action RPG, so if you enjoy games like the original Legend of Zelda, you might give it a go. Otherwise you'll just be frustrated having to look up gamefaqs every half an hour to see what obscure thing you missed or need to do. I dunno how hard the original would be to me now that I'm older, but it's definitely part of the oldschool challenge and as such, there's a great feeling of accomplishment just from finishing it.
