Re: Suddenly I've lost interest in videogames.
That was a really great short, and certainly makes me think of the time I spend playing because it's easier to get a little better at tekken rather than practicing because its a lot harder to get better at the guitar and find a band.
But I have to admit I'm a little confused by the point made with the PAX convention. It kinda just seemed like appeasement to make it seem like he isn't totally shaming any and all gamers.Last edited by DK; 02-16-2010, 01:05 AM.

Re: Suddenly I've lost interest in videogames.
Life is what you make of it.
Videogames are easy to get lost in.
Some of them are poweful experiences, that can inspire emotion and reflection.
Some of them simply massage the parts of our brains that make us feel pleasure--no matter how empty or hollow that pleasure may be.
It's part of our nature to explore and seek out experiences.
As humans, we thrive on said pleasures.
Videogames are not inherently evil.
It is up to the individual to take away from these television games what we can.
Are you compulsively grinding to reach level 80; are you gunning for the high score?
Or are you eking out experiences that challenge the mold and have something to say?
Some videogames encourage healthy play.
Others simply want you to sink time into them.
Some of them may be well-designed time-sinks,
while others are more obvious in their conceit.
What do you play videogames for?
Are these compulsions to pass the time?
Are you simply entertaining yourself?
Or are you taking something away from these experiences, rather than forfeiting your time and energy.
Videogames will only take, if you allow them to.
It is up to the individual to establish their own value in the time they spend alone, in front of a television, pushing on plastic, playing with their sophisticated action figures.Last edited by Toaster; 02-16-2010, 01:35 AM.

Re: Suddenly I've lost interest in videogames.
Videogames is a hobby like any other.
I really appreciate it as a form of entertainment, and really it's just fun being a geek.
I haven't made it far enough into life for it to cause a divorce, but it hasn't ever gotten in the way of my work or social life. So I doubt that's the case.
Really though, the amount of time I spend playing vidya probably isn't even comparable to that of the regular american's hours spent on cable television and myspace.
It's a good video though, and it probably is good for some poeple who's lives are completely comsumed by a single hobby. But I find it lame when poeple just cut one thing completely out of their lives instead of learning to take it down a few notches.

I don't know if I'd be the man I am today if I had never experienced Silent Hill 2 or Persona 4 D:

Ugh, same here.Originally posted by Goufunaki View PostI thought the video was kinda dull, and I ended up wasting my time watching a video about a guy explaining how I waste my time.
Yay!
There's a fine line between addiction and hobby. If you literally shun work, family, and friends to squeeze an extra hour out of WoW then you need to shut your computer down and go outside. Bringing my Buddhist philosophies into this subject, life is about appreciating the little joys without excess. If games bring you joy, by all means play them. If you play games to an excess that it's hurting your life, then stop. If you find something more enjoyable than playing games, by all means set them aside.
I figure this would be a simple concept. If you can't find the simple joys then you'll live a sad, miserable life.

Re: Suddenly I've lost interest in videogames.
I was visiting my sister in Seattle a few days back, and we went to the pike markets.
And there was a little shop that sold ocarinas with the triforce symbol and all!
Me and my sister were all geeking out, and the lady played the song of time and Zelda's lullaby for us on it. It was so awesome.
I'm pretty sure me and my sister wouldn't be as close if it wasn't for Zelda or Harvest Moon 64.
Though I kind of wish I bought that ocarina so I could transport myself back to a more magical time when I wasn't military or had to buy plan b pills.

This. I can't believe this is even a thing.Originally posted by marcus View PostI figure this would be a simple concept. If you can't find the simple joys then you'll live a sad, miserable life.
Do what you like, don't let some boring video I didn't even watch tell you what's wrong with you.

I guess it's great that this guy realized he had a problem and all, but pretty much everything he said seemed pretty obvious to me.
Not that I don't waste an enormous amount of my time playing games and staring at the internet, but I know exactly what I'm doing when I do it.

Re: Suddenly I've lost interest in videogames.
I think though, for most of us, the line between addiction and a hobby is a bit blurry. And this video just wants to remind us to keep it in check before it harms what really matters, like with his divorce.
And really there's a plethora of other hobbies out there that actually produce results other than wasting time. If I had spent all the time I put into vidya over the past 6 years into actually drawing/studying, I'd have finished Eff Eff Ex by now, be working on/finishing my Masters of Fine Arts, and feel a whole lot more self-assured and productive.
Well, if I was that productive anyway, which I'm not. If I gave up the vidya entirely, I might've ended up wasting my time and money on something else like drugs and alcohol. Who knows....and that's why.
