I think my PS3 almost died!

I just went to change my PS3 background back to my old pic and when I went to select the size it froze on me. I hit the PS button but it didn't do anything. I turned it off on the front, but it just blinked for a really LONG time so I fliped the switch in back. Turned it back on and it showed the default background, but none of the icons showed up. The controller wasn't working and it wouldn't turn off in the front. So I turned it off in the back again.

Tried a few more times with the same results. I turned it off and dug out the warranty to make sure I'm still covered. (Luckly I am.) Tried it again and it went back to the background I had before it froze and everything seems to be working fine now. No data was lost and all seems to be okay.

Has anyone heard of this happening before? Is it something I should worry about happening again? Any insight would be nice because I'm kinda freaking about it.

you're under warranty, so get it sent in for repairs while you have that option. SOMETHING isnt right.

make sure you backup your data, of course.

That reminds me. I've been meaning to ask, how the blue hell to you back up anything on the PS3? Serious question.

there's a backup utility. you just attach external storage that has the needed amount of space.

or you can press triangle on your saves, and copy them over to an SD card or USB drive.

This is gonna sound stupid, but how do I go about sending it in to be repaired? There isn't a number on the recipt. Do I bring it back to where I bought it or call Sony technical support? My warranty is good until july 30th so I have a little time.

            call sony.

if you exchange it, or they send you a different system, you won't be able to restore a backup file. any saves you copied using the triangle button that arent locked to your system would be able to be ported over though. most games with trophy support are locked to your system.

so you'd ideally get it repaired, if possible. rather than exchanged or replaced.

Yup, pretty sure my PS3 has read it's last disk. I let it be, hoping it would at least last till after FF13 and GoW3, but the XMB locked up again. A few times actually. I restored default settings with the troubleshooting menu, but that didn't work.

Just got off the phone with sony. They say what I tried generally works for that problem. The only other option before sending it in is to restore the whole system and let the hard drive fix itself. (maybe) I copied what I could onto a flashdrive, but ever ****ing thing seems to be system locked. At least I got my oblivion file with over 200 hours loged in backed up. (it's a pride thing)

The restore has been going on for over 20min--and I'm 5% complete. *sigh* Says another 4+ hours.

The biggest thing I'm worried about is if they give me a new system, and it's not backwards compatible. There goes my RPG Maker 1 project. I'd have to go buy 12 psx memory cards.

demand the same model you sent them.

but RPG Maker 1 will still work. all PS3s can play PS1 games. but not PS2 games. so RPGM2 and 3 go bye bye.

also, if they send you a different system, they won't deactivate it from your account, so your old system that you dont have anymore is taking up one of your five activations for PSN content forever. might want to ask them about that.

RPG Maker 1 working is a relief. I have enough ps2 memory cards for RPG Maker 2&3. I haven't signed up for a psn account so thats fine.

I'm going to stress getting the same model back. I hate the look of the slims.

                  Thanks for all the advice.

Well after the total system restore it seems to be working fine. I'm not holding my breathe though. Any sign of an error I'm just getting it serviced.
