Probe: Olympic track didn’t cause luger’s death
A 21-year-old luger Nodar Kumaritashvili from the Repulic of Georgia died during a practice run. He was thrown from his sled over the wall of the track and his head smashed into a pole. He died at a trauma center.
He was going about 90 mph on what has been determined to be the fastest luge track in the world. There have been other accidents on the track as far back as last year but without serious injury. The fatal crash was investigated and ruled to be a result of human error. Still some precautions are being taken, the wall near the finish line has been extended and the ice reshaped to keep the sleds from riding too high on the final curves. Also the racers will start lower on the track limiting the speeds they will reach by the end. Some racers aren't happy about the changes though.
