Star Wars VIII: Return of Vader

8-year-olds and RPG Maker make an interesting combination. This 8-year-old friend of mine ('cause his family is friends with ours) mentioned me making a game for him. Later on, I suggested we tried making the game together, where he'd tell me what he wanted while I did most of the hard work. And he wanted to make Ep 8. Skrew 7, he wanted 8. And forget continuity, Vader is alive and kicking, and apparently a good guy at least for the moment, as he is being called Anakin. Here's his characters.

    Obi-wan, using the first sprite.
Anakin, using one of the villager sprites.
    Yoda, using the dragon sprite.

    Nonplayables possibly being:
Darth Vader, using the Grim Reaper sprite.
Anakin/Darth Vader after being burned, using the skeleton sprite.
Armadilla or whatever her name is, using the second sprite.

So we did the title screen, and had the text start scrolling up with it saying "Episode VIII - Return of Vader". After we did that part, I asked him what he wanted the story to be about. Well, apparently he doesn't want to do the story. Makes sense, as he isn't often interested in the stories, just watching the action (even if the action is turn-based).

Well, we (he) decided to move on to creating the places. First place in the game being the Naboo canyon. Except, oh no, we have to create the map!

And that's where we stopped. He insisted that we save it because he'd want to work on it more. So I did, but I didn't think he would, especially since we don't really see each other very often. At least not at each other's houses. And yet at the end of the day, after fireworks, he wanted to work on it some more. He couldn't though, since it was time for him to go home.

Anyway, just an interesting RPGM-related story I wanted to share. I doubt it'll ever come close to being finished, though he did seem interested in the idea of people online playing the game he makes.

I think it would be interesting to see if he'd be willing to learn how to use RPGM.

Oh, man. You guys shouldve seen this game my little brother and his friend made with RPGM1 a while ago (they were about 9). It was something about gems or orbs, and it was hilarious. They actually made an opening scene with some kind of boss creature that went something like this:

HERO: Give me the orb's, deman!

BOSS: Never! Not entil you give me you're powers!!

          HERO: Arghrrrrrrrrr! Fight!

          BOSS: Oh no!

Then there was a fight that the characters always lost because the stats were completely unbalanced. I think I have it saved somewhere on my old memory card. Good times.

Stories like that are the best thing about RPGM. Friends/relatives making games to entertain themselves and each other. Having something to do together that's more involved and personally fulfilling than just playing a game. I remember my cousin and me (he's only a few years younger than me) coming up with a game together. We were using a story I'd made up a long time ago but putting ourselves in as characters by having us get sucked into the PlayStation while making the game. We didn't get far but it was fun while it lasted.

Whenever I make RPGs, I'd usually cast myself and my friends as characters. It's always a hoot to imagine ourselves in a makeshift fantasy world fighting monsters, saving damsels and exploring wicked dungeons. I'd picture everyone in different kinds of roles in a fantasy life--one of my friends could be a young king, another could be a princess, and someone else could be a legendary hero from the past.

As far as character creation goes, I would model their characters according to their personal tastes. One friend of mine would be a knight-type fighter warrior who can equip heavy armor and two-handed swords. And a female friend would be a Priest-type character that relied on defensive spells.

I've made about three RPGs using "RPG Maker 1". They're all part of a series. Because of the complexity of RPG Maker 2, I've put the series on hiatus, but I will go back to it in the future provided I have the time or the patience. When RPG Maker 3 comes out, I'll skip ahead a few sequels so I can save future projects for RM2.
