    Yakuza

So I got this game a few months ago, and now that I've beaten Bayonetta and Demon's Souls (and my roommate's in the living room where the 360 and PS3 are) I've decided to start playing this again.

It's got a few problems. The most glaring being that the right stick does not control the camera, but the map. In fact, the only control you have over the camera is pressing L2 to center it behind you.

Combat controls are also a little sticky. It's hard to cancel out of a combo once you've started it, and lock-on doesn't always lock on, at least not where you want to. Compound that with the aforementioned lack of camera control.

But once you get used to all that, its really cool. It's Grand Theft Auto RPG. It's got equippable items and even random encounters sometimes, and aside from the wandering you can do and the requests you can fulfill it's pretty linear. Which is great, 'cause there's less time wasting stuff.

Despite what I just said, combat is my favorite part of the game. It's like a beat-em-up but not really because you actually have to give some thought to how you fight - what weapon you use on what enemy, how early you'll finish your combo, who you're going to use your HEAT finisher on. It's great.

Also, Kazuma Kiryu is a great protagonist. He's old school. He's got mad respect for himself and others. Old guys call him "son" and young punks call him "old man" and he beats the **** out of both of them.

And now there's a FOURTH one coming out in Japan? I guess it's a real thing over there. That's great.

Anyone else play this? If so, what's up with the hostesses? Is it worth buying nice things for them?

Edit: Oh, no. Ohhhhh, no. There's a casino in this game. I am so ****ed. I'm gonna spend sooo much time playing blackjack. I can't resist videogame casinos. Not even in Xenosaga.

I played about 45 minutes into it and stopped and never got around to going back. {:c

These are games I'm slightly interested in, only since they seem to continue in spirit where Shenmue left off.

I made a post a while back on my thoughts. I played the first two games, and loved every second.

I only did two host girls, and it isn't going to give you much. Really can go without doing any of those side things. But it is a bit of fun.

I defintally recomend getting the second game after you beat the first. The combat is a tad better, and story never stops getting excited.

Defintally getting the 3rd game when it comes over here.

I've also played one and two and have also posted my thoughts
          in another topic.

You're pretty much dead on with everything I feel about the game.
          (sans the gambling, lol)

I really wouldn't call it Grand Theft Auto: The RPG either.
It's got the open world aspects of GTA, but you're more a hero
than a neutral party who undergoes criminal activities to gain some goal.

In fact you barely do anything illegal at all besides underground
          boxing and illegal gambling.

I'll grab the 3rd game when I get my own PS3.

            WELP, I finished it.

Honestly, I was getting a little bored towards the end. A lot of the story revolves around a kid, and well, kids in M-rated video games just **** me off (Onimusha 3, Heavy Rain). And the rest was just real melodramatic. Not the cool, Beat Takeshi manly melodramatic, just the regular, stale, wholesale Japanese kind. Like, "I just knocked out 8 guys with an electric stove, I do not need to hear about your amnesia right now."

And I was even expecting the combat to unfold a little more. And while my reflexes and tactics did get better, I was still using variations of the same basic combo.

But then! Once you max out your Technique, THEN you get the skill that lets you finish every combo with an exquisitely animated lethal grappling move, and - GET THIS - it works on bosses, too! It's like getting the Hyper Beam in Super Metroid.

'Cause then once you have that move, the final fights in the game are so satisfying. Mainly because a lot of your adversaries have guns, so as soon as you close in on them you're just like, LET'S SEE YOU TRY THAT WITH A BROKEN SPINE!

And the last fight? Oh MAN. These guys must've played Metal Gear Solid. And then Kojima must've played THIS! It's a wonderful mobius strip of climactic shirtless fights. And then there's a sweet FMV. You know that if an FMV comes up, there's gonna be an explosion.

But then it's ANOTHER cut scene where someone's dying and they're giving a really basic and uninspiring speech on courage or love. It should've ended with the explosion.

If I can find the second one for cheap, I'll go for it. Otherwise, I dunno. It was pretty fun. But after playing the Yakuza 3 demo, it doesn't look like they've changed a whole lot.
