How do you use text cues to show tone in your posts? How do you read others cues?

    Things I do:

    • I SPEAK IN ALL CAPS TO DENOTE USING A STUPID VOICE OR SARCASM

    • when i don't use any capitalization i am trying to convey a somewhat monotone, deadpan delivery

    • When I speak properly and with punctuation I am using my regular voice.

    • I sometimes use tildes to convey my sentence is trailing off like an echo in a canyon~~

    • Ellipses usually to show confusion...

    • I sometimes use exclamations! I hear them as my sentence rising at the end! They are silly!

    • I rarely use semicolons; if I do, I probably am trying to sound condescending.

    Things I read:

    • When people type out lol I read it as elowel, when people abbreviate words or misspell a lot of words like shld and culd and wut I read it as if they have a speech impediment of some kind.

    • When people use this face :P, instead of reading it as dry humor or silly humor like I think I'm supposed to, I read it the same as someone making this face , which makes whatever said before it sound more dickish.

    What about you guys?

I just put 'lol' after sarcasm. Other than that I do nothing notable.

I find that leaving out punctuation purposefully minimalizes any issue at hand

        Things I do:

Bold to call attention to something specific, information usually, and italics to emphasize the voice or tone.

Parentheses (as an aside). Sometimes I over-use them and I try to be conscious of that.

A lot of the time I feel like the tone I'm trying to convey isn't getting across, either because I'm too fond of the edit button or too hung up on writing as if I'm going to submit my thoughts for a letter grade.

        Things I read:

LOL rhymes with pole in my head and I kinda hate it.

I assume anyone with a lot of abbreviations and spelling errors doesn't care if I read their post, so I don't.

The only thing I'll skip over faster is l33t-sp34k.

        What else can you do?

Thoughtful response, I feel we should preface all of our sentences with the intended emotion like that race in Mass Effect to avoid misunderstandings.

someone in the advisor forum actually proposed that every post be required to have an emoticon at the end, so we could tell how we were supposed to interpret the post.

Now, while advisor forum stuff can be made public, I'm gonna leave this user's name out for sake of it being an awful suggestion that no one liked, and few even bothered with replying to it.

And some of us already do it, anyways. ;3

I agree with the Dragon. :3

And just to prevent further confusion: yes, I did steal the ":3" face from Mora because I thought it was funny and cute.

I do stuff with words sometimes.

I'd like to assume most of the stuff I say isn't taken very seriously.

Uncertain rebuttal, HK kinda had some emotion.

In order to display sarcasm I usually just say something so ridiculous in response that there's no way I could be serious. And if I feel like having people read it in an Australian's voice I put a question mark at the end? To add the idea of an intonation? And so, ah, you break up your sentences? To add emphasis I just do the boring italics. I stopped using emoticons when the level of grammar had descended to the level of a parrot, and those in that category often use emoticons. You folks here have excellent grammar/sentence structure, but I am still reminded of the folks who forget the English language.
What's the point of having an emergency response system if you can't provoke the wrath of God?

                            olol is my condescending lol

wat in response to something stupid that makes no sense

no caps or punctuation denotes that I'm kind of being a douchebag about what I'm saying.

exclamation points essentially implies that I'm being silly about whatever I'm saying.
