The situation begs the question: did he compute the value of pi by using the 4*atan(1) value? If so, computing atan(1) to the 83431th place must have involved processing an entire 83431th order Taylor series. I doubt that the human mind can process derivatives on that order, while keeping track of each computation for that amount of time. But if he did in fact do it that way, it would be a tremendous accomplishment. Memorization techniques were more likey employed, however. The man still deserves the utmost respect for his mental capacity.
