The "I play an instrument" Thread

Be it kazoo, guitar, piano, snare, trombone, clarinet, what have you, let's hear what you play.

Anything like how long you've played said instrument, what your forte' is, any aspirations/accomplishments, etc. etc.

    I'll start.

    Guitar
I've played it for a little over 2 years now, play a Gibson Les Paul and I prefer to play Blues, Classic Rock, and video game arrangements. I want to get a band going that goes back to the roots of rock, which really is only doable in the form of blues as classic rock isn't really possible to replicate without covering songs. I've already played with a band for one song, but it WAS the solo so that's not too shabby.

    Violin
I started playing this thing like 7 years ago but stopped 2 years ago. It's the reason I'm good with the guitar, really. Not much to say since I don't really play it anymore.

    Now it's your turn.

I'm surrounded by noise makers. I have no skills or talent.

I have not put forth much effort to Learn an instrument.

I just pick them up and make noises. I like them all.

I would like to be able to play all of them somewhat decently.

    Synthesizers. Drum machines. Guitars.

    It's a work in progress.

Re: The "I play an instrument" Thread

I've been playing guitar for about 2 years. Got as good as I am now about a year ago, the last year I haven't made any progress at all. I play merely for my own enjoyment, I really love playing. I've been to busy with school and stuff lately that I haven't been able to get better I feel, but I also think that I am nowhere near as ambitious about playing as I was when I first started and I blame a lot of the fact that I am not getting any better on that. Anyway I play a acoustic guitar mostly, have a Strat but have no talent on that thing, I honestly don't know how to play it and bought it under the impression that it would be exactly like playing a acoustic guitar. As far as what I play goes, mostly folk, classic rock, some alternative rock, and a little southern rock i guess.

Same here, brother. I met a very talented person over Craigslist who I really would've liked to jam with again but I'm too busy with other things at the moment to take on another responsibility. My focus this year is to become deep, and narrow when it comes to my activities rather than spread to thin.

Grew up playing the drum set/percussion, haven't played for quite some time though.

I play the recorder just to familarize myself with notes and reading music.

I will be buy an acoustic guitar real soon and will see how far I can get teaching myself.

I welcome any advice/info when it comes to what time of guitar I should get. I want an acoustic with vinyl strings.... how much money am I looking at for a new one??

Re: The "I play an instrument" Thread

I played alto sax from 5th-6th grade then baritone sax 7th and 8th. I stopped after that since I lost interest, but I can still remember all the notes.

last two years I learned how to play a 5 piece drum set. I'm not amazing, but I'll say I'm at the very least competent. Gotta get back into playing it again

Piano. I'm awful at it, I only just started playing it but I'm able to play with both hands but not separately. Using a little kids beginner book to learn some of the basics. But I am able to play jump (save for the solo, but that's really finger speed)

But overall I'm going to learn more this school semester about structure and listening skills.

Re: The "I play an instrument" Thread

My first instrument (besides a recorder in like 5th grade) was an old Korg (I think) sequencer. Subsequently purchased a Korg DW-8000 (an analog modelling keyboard from the early/mid 80s), a Multimoog, a crappy Boss (Roland offshoot brand) 202 sampler, a Roland MC-303 (not a TB-303, unfortunately...it was one of those all-in-one "beatboxes"), and an analog drum head sans drumpads. Also had a rack-mountable effects unit and a Korg Kaos pad at one point as well. The 303 and the two effects units I no longer have, but everything else I do.

Mostly right now, I work on music on the Korg DS-10 program for the Nintendo DS, and on Beaterator on the PSP. Also sometimes use my minidisc deck and portable minidisc player to record and chop stuff up and reconfigure it.

I saw a dulcimer in an antique store today. I had no idea this is what they looked like:
