Can anybody recommend a good free video editing software. I have a bunch of *ahem* "movies" taking up my hard drive that I only want for one scene. So I need something to snip out the part I want so I can delete the rest. I can only find free trials that either restrict that feature or limit the size of file you can edit. I've tried Windows Movie Maker but it tends to crap out when you import anything longer than a few minutes.

Virtual Dub. Its pretty easy to use so long as you have used some video/audio editing software before.
If you dont set your codecs right, and audio formats and compression and all that jazz you can easily end up with 5 minute long videos that are like 3gigs. Watch that kinda stuff and youll be fine.

I 2nd VirtualDub. I use it all the time. You'll probably want to download a codec pack called 'K-lite' though, and configure it to recognize virtualdub. Then you can install some plugins, and load any type of file from FLV to AVI. It only SAVES as an AVI, but you can set it to 'direct stream copy' and it will maintain the same resolution & bitrate as the original.
If you don't want to do that then you don't have to, but you'll want some kind of program to transfer your video files to AVI or MPG, because that's all that VirtualDub will open otherwise.Last edited by Ωbright; 12-29-2009, 01:28 AM.
