I've only been there once, but our group:
went to Empire State building
went to opera house, saw Madame Butterfly
went to Carnegie Hall (performed there)
went to ground zero
saw a Broadway show.
we did other stuff, but I forgot right now.
of course, you must go to Times Square, where there are such things as a gigantic Toys 'R Us
you should also eat a hot dog.
Don't forget to stop by China Town...(Take the R or N Train Downtown to Canal Street) they have some really cool game shops there and you can find some really rare stuff. There is also a cool used game shop at St. Mark's Place(that's the street's name) where you can find just about any old NES, SNES, GENESIS games you want...it also has vintage toys and action figures...I got my She-Ra action figure from there(it has real combable hair!!!)
stop laughing!
Oh, and do you and your fam like Italian food? Well there is a place on 9th Avenue and 54th street called Mangia E Bevi...the food is great, and it is so cheap!!! Also try to get tickets to Letterman if you can...the ticket people are outside on Broadway and 8th Avenue between 52 and 54th street...they are just dying to get tourists to see the show.
Madame Tussaud's wax museum is on 42 street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Jim Hanleys Universe(a comic store) is on 34th between 6th and 5th Avenues...um...what else...games, comics, food, Oh yeah and you can try to get to Ground Zero if you are up to it. If not, go to Christopher Street Piers to get a nice view of the Hudson River...it's really a nice relaxing place in the Summer.
Empire State Building, definitely. Also, a hot dog.
Then I'll hunt down Magus and throw stuff into his window.
I highly recommend Gray's Papaya on the corner of 7th Avenue and 8th Street (there are other locations but that's the one I frequent). It's $1.75 - $2.75 for two BODACIOUS hot dogs and a drink (soda or a fruit smoothie type of beverage. I recommend the banana drink). It doesn't really get more New York than that, y'know, unless you wanna tap dance on the Statue of Liberty (which is technically on the Jersey side anyway...) or Brooklyn Bridge.
Oh, and everything is much smaller than photos make them out to be... damn Rockefeller Plaza...

Oh Yeah...how could I forget Gray's Papaya?!!! Go there!! And right across the street from Gray's is Go Sushi! It is a fast food Sushi/Asian cuisine place. Not really a family style place, more like a quick bite to eat, but the food is pretty good.

If you really want good sushi I recommend going to St. Mark's, which is by the Bowery on East 7th and 8th, closer to 3rd and 2nd Avenues.
That area is also where I got my Sega Saturn. SHASSHIN~~
