I'd be excited for Yakuza 3, but I never played past an hour in Yakuza and never bought Yakuza 2.

You can play Yakuza 2 without playing 1.
Most of the important events from 1 are covered in 2.

Playing and beating 1 just allows you to use your finished
save in Yakuza 2 to get a few items to help you out in the beginning.

Cause Yakuza 1's English voice overs are a pain to get through.
That and Yakuza 2 has better load times.
