Well, I tried to start my computer tonight, and it did the Compaq screen then adjusted my monitors resolution appropriately, and then I got a black screen with that error message.

I restarted my computer, only to recieve the error message again.

I restarted it again, while tapping F9, to run a diagonostics check on the computer. The Diagnostics test said everything was good and gave me the option to reboot.

I rebooted it, and it came on like normal.

What the hell just happened, and should I be worried?

Well, I started my computer up again, and got the same problem.


Is there anyway to start my computer without having to run a diagnostics check on it first?

I have the same problem and have just been running my computer in debug mode. believe it's a virus goin' round.

yeah. a virus probably killed some of your windows boot files.

probably the best thing you guys could do to get your files back would be to boot the thing in Linux, that's what worked for me when my hard drive got borked. then just transfer your files to a flash drive, and be sure to virus scan them.

Bitdefender only found one virus, maybe I should run a deep system scan?

EDIT: BitDefender found no viruses. Might have been the Johnny Cash CD in my CD drive.

Go into Setup and change your boot order, you probably have CD-ROM as the first place to look for the OS.

I just, uh, took the CD out...

That seemed to work fine.

EDIT: No it didn't. I just tried it again and got the black screen again. Weird. I think I'll just put my computer to sleep for now...

odd, this happened to me just now for the first time. any idea what virus it could be?

What joy, I can't put my computer to sleep. Soon as it disconnects from the internet it wakes back up.

This time when I ran the diagnostics check it gave me a Warning when scanning my boot path. Also told me that it failed to detect a drive, although when it scanned my hard drive, it told me it was fine.

Booted up anyway though.

Yes yes, that site seemed rather convoluted, message boards like that scare and disorient me. Or maybe I was just high.

Turned my computer on after leaving it off for like 10 hours, and it started up normally again.

This is a very confusing problem.
