    Massive cluster s*** f***

Welp...looks like I'm gonna have to end up doing something that I've been putting off doing for a LONG time now, namely, doing a system restore on my PS3.

I made a thread about this problem I'm having a while back, but never really did anything about it. Problem being, when too many video files (and apparently, MP3s) of the same type are downloaded/transferred to the PS3's HDD, sometimes, they are "overwritten" over the old ones. Technically, they are still there, but there is no way to access them. They're basically "ghost files" that just clog up memory space. As an example, right now, I have a folder under Video called, "Unknown" that says it has 54 files in it, using 178 MB, but there's nothing there. I've changed the sorting of the files previously, which DID allow me to delete some of the ghost files, but at least 400-500 MB of them still remain. Space is not the main problem (although, on my 250 gig HDD that I put in earlier this year, I only have 67 gigs left), however. Main problem is exporting my video stuff made with EyeCreate, which has more than once made a ghost file of a previously exported file (luckily, I don't think I've permanently lost anything). Plus, as I'm getting ready to dump a bunch of MP3s to the PS3, and probably rip some CDs (both to put on my PSP), I don't want to have to recopy stuff multiple times and/or create more ghost files.

God, this is gonna be a huge undertaking. Not only do I need to back up all my save files, video files, and some music files I only have on the PS3 onto a flash drive (Demon's Souls file is SOL...it's not able to be copied ), but after the system restore, I need to REDOWNLOAD ALL OF THE GAMES, DEMOS, ETC, from the Playstation Store that I have on my HDD. This is gonna require a MASSIVE amount of time.

As I said before, the memory left on the HDD is not the main issue. But this is something that I've needed to do for quite some time now, so might as well bite the bullet and do it now.

This is why the PS3 is no real replacement for a computer.

This is true. But how many times in the lifespan of a typical PC does one need to do a system restore? More than once, methinks.

Also, there was talk online when I searched for info concerning this problem that it might be rectified with an upcoming firmware update, but I'm thinking that firmware has not been released yet.

Never had to do it outside of one time I was dealing with technical support and they demanded I do it. (No, it didn't solve anything.)

doesnt the backup option copy all the saves?

or would that copy all the ghost media files too?

Backup is a clone, meaning ghost files go with it.

Trust me, I spent quite a few hours looking into this a number of months ago to see if there was another way to get around this, but alas, there is not.

This is my one and only beef with the console. As it's being/been positioned as a do-anything media device, one would think that it would not have these problems with media files.

            *sigh*

I'm probably gonna watch one of the Blu-Rays I got from Toaster on it right now, and then start backing stuff up when the movie's done.

            (Audition, btw, Mora).

              Bump!

So I downloaded something for Home last night, and when I exited out, and then tried to open it up later, it told me it was searching the HDD, but the icon was not moving. It just stopped loading anything. The console did not freeze up, as I was able to exit out of Home, but after deleting the two newest Home files that showed up under saved games or whatever, it still was not working. So I took the plunge to do this massive undertaking.

Copied all the ripped CDs to an external HDD, backed up all the movies/TV shows/etc I'd downloaded, copied as many of the save game files as I could (DA:O and Demon's Souls were sadly not able to be copied), copied the RPGM3 stuff I did not already have on PS2 memory cards, took a deep breath, and reformatted.

Went to bed at almost 5 AM last night, and right now I've got about 7 hours left for the format. It'll probably just be getting finished when I get home from work. This is not the roughest part, though. The roughest part is redownloading all my PSN games. I'm probably gonna hold off on redownloading all the demos I never played anyway, as well as the making-of type videos. That'll save some time. It's still gonna be a chore.

That, and I lost about 60 hrs on my Demon's Souls main. I'm gonna justify that by taking into account talking to Gouf in Home the other night, when he said that a sort of "jack of all trades" type character will get raped in NG+. I was focusing mostly on magic, but almost all other stats besides luck and faith were at 17-18, with intelligence at about 26. So I was most likely gonna have a problem anyway. I'm gonna go through again, make a different build, and this time I should blow right through what I've already done without too many hitches.

Meh. At least I'll clear up a ton of hard drive space.

You spent 60 hours in Demon's Souls and have yet to finish it? Yeesh. I lost my original character when I switched PSN accounts a few months back. It sucks, but you'll get over it.

I tried playing it a few days ago in NG+. My build is very very weak defensively, but can tear things apart in usually only 1-2 hits. I died probably 20 times that night trying to farm for souls in the Shrine of Storms before deciding to call it quits.

I think I'm the only person that does regular full backups to an external hard drive in case of stuff like this.

I think I'll follow that lead from here on, Valk. That's a really good idea, actually.

Cant you just pop the drive out and hook it up to your PC, and pull the files off manually?

                        Unfortunately, no.

PS3 folder architecture is ****ing weird. I've heard a lot of people complaining about "ghost" files appearing when they do a massive transfer of files, or when the folders are threaded/named properly. It doesn't help that only two levels are really allowed, either.

I got a 500gb HDD a while back with the intention of backing a lot of my media onto there but ended up deciding against it--for the time being at least.

Off topic, but Toaster...I'm guessing you were farming 4-2 for souls. I know on the first cycle, you can just drop down, kill the two ghost things (my magic takes 'em out in 2-3 hits, depending on if I'm in soul or body form), and then take out the reaper, which I can do in 3 swings of my falchion or scimitar. Less than 5 minutes, and usually about 6k souls. Is this area for farming THAT much harder in NG+?

Pure Black in 4-1 and I kept making stupid mistakes. I can kill things in 1-2 hits, but the same applies for me.

So this is interesting...once the HDD was reformatted, and then I restarted, it kept all of my PSN accounts, and I was even automatically logged in to my main NA account. The internet browser no longer had my bookmarks (did not think it would, and there was no way I found to export them), but it sent me right to the Pav when I opened the browser window, albeit I was not logged in. All of my system and network settings were apparently saved as well. Nice.

Here's the thing that still gets me, though...and I had this same question/concern when I backed up my old 60 gig HDD and put it back onto the 250 gig. It says I have 232 gigs total space out of 250 gigs (which makes perfect logical sense), but after only allocating the 10 gigs for another operating system, I apparently only have 196 gigs left. Even taking into account that 10 gig partition, that would have only left me with 206 gigs out of a total available of 232. Where are the other 26 gigs? There are no files on the HDD whatsoever.

Only thing I can think of is that the difference between the 250 and the 232 gigs took into account space for the OS, system data, etc, and that other "missing" 26 gigs is being used for things like caching, buffering, and other programs on the PS3 itself (web browser, photo and video viewer, etc).

Downloaded Home again, allocated the max 12 gigs (which took me down to 184 gigs left), and when I logged in, of course my avatar needed to be remade and my default personal space was furnished with the default furniture. No surprise. However, all my items/clothing/personal spaces were still listed. Of course, I'll still need to redownload any spaces in Home, personal or otherwise, but it's nice that everything I've won/unlocked/purchased is still listed. I'm guessing this might all be tied to my account serverside rather than off my HDD, as I would have guessed.

Now comes the fun part...beginning the process of redownloading all my PSN games.
