Whats that? Sorry I cant hear you because Im the greatest movie EVER

    http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/0...t_us_boxoffice

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" smashed the record for a single-day opening at the North American box office, and was on track to score one of the biggest weekend tallies of all time, according to preliminary data issued on Saturday.

The vampire romance sequel earned $72.7 million across the United States and Canada on Friday, a figure that includes record-breaking midnight sales of $26.3 million, said the film's closely held distributor Summit Entertainment.

The old record for a single-day opening was $62.2 million, held by last year's "Batman" sequel "The Dark Knight," which went on to become the second-biggest grossing movie of all time in North America before accounting for inflation.

Trust me: knowing this piece of **** movie crushed Dark Knight's single-day record left me speechless.

I said: "Someone pinch me. I'm having a nightmare."

Crunk, that image is a bit too graphic. I'd remove it.

I really liked The Dark Knight after thinking Batman Begins was boring.

I didn't find Twilight to be AS bad as I thought it would be. It was just a tween chick flick that happened to have (really lame) vampires in it. There are lots of tween girls and women of all ages who consider it the second coming so I'm not at all surprised by its success.

For a relatively long span of time, the five best-selling books in America were the four Twilight books and the director's commentary on the first movie.

I just think it's sad that romance has died so thoroughly that this large a number of girls and women would latch onto the "super-boyfriends" that they see in Twilight.

                The expert on romance here.

This is no different than guys liking boom boom pow explosion movies like Crank, to me~ These movies might do so well because not as many silly teen melodramas are released as dumb action movies (see: everyone liking law abiding citizen).

Beyond that though, that opening night figure really is extremely surprising. All the websites around were saying how the franchise is doomed.

True, you are most correct. However, what percent of the people that saw New Moon do you think have not read the books also? Probably a very small one. I've glanced through the books and trust me, beautiful prose they are not. The story itself is also (relatively) weak and Ms. Meyer has only a very basic grasp on characterization, although she does do a good job of letting the readers see all of her various personality defects with her self-insert main character.

However, to avoid pulling a Perversion, I will get right to my point: The franchise survives on the basis that a huge number of teenage girls worship Edward, and to a lesser extent the werewolf guy whose name escapes me. Every time that I hear actual readers talking about the book, they don't talk about the vampires. They don't even talk about the romance, much as they did when The Notebook was still the young female favorite. No, they talk about the boys.

Since modern (american) society is slowly moving further into a form that promotes "daddy problems", the old kind of romance--long walks together, withholding virginity, love letters sent through the mail, etc--is also fading. As romance becomes more of a "hooking up" thing among the Twilight saga's main demographic, 11-18 year old girls, those of them that do want a more deep and honestly romanticist version of dating typically do not get that; I think most guys can admit that when they were in that age group, and dating that age group, they weren't exactly trying to form lasting bonds or slowly woo women with gifts and praise. Nowadays, it's all about the sex. The jiggly bits which women dangle before you before many don't know how to flirt any other way. Heck, even the social image. And due to the well-documented wonders of peer pressure, even the truly romantic girls out there have to settle for this 'rougher' version of courtship.

Unless of course they form a fictional relationship with, say, a boy that is both caring and dangerous, sweet and powerful. Like a vampire--Va ha ha!

My sister was watching the first movie on the movie channel at my parents place.

I walked in about halfway, and watched some of it. The first time Edward came onto the screen I just said outloud "OH HES TOTALLY GAY". It just kept getting worse and worse, with everything I know about vampire lore getting chucked out the window.

I CANT MAKE OUT WITH YOU BELLA. I MIGHT KILL YOU BY ACCIDENT.

The best part of the movie was the fight in the church or whatever building it was where that vampire dude started kicking everybodys ass and broker Bellas leg. I was like FIIIIIIIIIIIIIINALLY.

Only problem I have with it is that it ruins everything about vampires.

Didn't vampires used to be, i dunno, scary?

The thing about The Dark Knight is that it had a pedigree. Like, y'know, a good director and good actors.

I haven't seen New Moon, but if Twilight is any indication--

That and the baseball scene are actually fantastic. It's like the movie only exists so that those two scenes could be filmed.

                          **** you, America.

                          You used to be cool.

What next? A movie based on John Wayne in 2012 where he talks about his feelings instead of kicking ass in the wild west? C'mon!

What really gets me is how much peer pressure comes into play for how successful the books and movies are. My sister-in-law read it, then wouldn't shut up about them until my mother and my sister-in-law's friends read it, then they wouldn't shut up until their friends and family read it, and even people who were like "I have no interest in reading the books, and I really didn't like the first one" still went to see the second one.

This is where :FFFFFFFFFFFFFF needs to be invented.

but I still plan on renting the second one when the DVD comes out.
