Games in which a character dies

    Spoiler alert.

Hey gang, I need some help brainstorming games in which the main or a playable character dies permenatly. Chrono Trigger (yes I know he comes back. But he doesn't have to), Phantasy Star II, Final Fantasy IV and VII jump to mind but I'm having trouble thinking of others. What am I missing?

Legend of Dragoon and Final Fantasy V both count, technically, despite the fact that the new character you get to replace them is basically the same.

Final Fantasy X also should technically count.

Or are you only looking for games where main or playable characters die during the course of the game, and not at the very very end?

    Grandia II is another.

Chrono Cross would as well for Kid or Kit or whatever her name is, since she *can* die.

    Phantasy Star IV.

are you thinking of Phantasy Star IV?
      *** SPOILERS ***
That's the one with Alys dying.
      *** END SPOILERS ***

      Final Fantasy V...
      *** SPOILERS ***
Galuf dies 2/3 into the game after fending off XDeath.
      *** END SPOILERS ***

      Final Fantasy Tactics.
      *** SPOILERS ***
Algus dies pretty early in the game.
      *** END SPOILERS ***

      Mass Effect.
      *** SPOILERS ***
You have to choose whether to leave Kaidan or Ashley to die on a planet. To be fair, though, we never see that character dead, and I wouldn't be surprised if Bioware brings the dead one back in Mass Effect 2. Oh, and you can choose to kill Wrex.
      *** END SPOILERS ***

Huh. You're more likely to find main characters dead in western RPGs, I suspect.

            spoilers obviously

            *** SPOILERS ***
SMT: You either kill both of your male party members or they end up killing each other depending on your alignment.

SMT2: Beth dies after taking a killing blow intended for your character.

Digital Devil Saga 2: Your entire party is killed off over the course of the game in increasingly elaborate manner, ending with the main character being burned alive so that you can enter the final dungeon.

Suikoden: Gremio dies saving you, Pahn can be killed while fighting
your father, and like 90% of the characters you recruit can be killed
            during the army battle sections.

Super Robot Wars OG2: Daitetsu, one of your battleship captains, is killed
            during an ambush.

Valkyria Chronicles: Isara is killed by a sniper after a battle.

Valkyrie Profile: This is sort of the opposite of all the rest...
but uh, everyone who you can recruit is already dead.

            *** END SPOILERS ***

edit: uhh, sorry, i figured spoilers were sort of the point of the topic.

If we allowed for "90% of the characters you recruit" kind of thing, we'd have to allow every Fire Emblem game, and Hoshigami, and Final Fantasy Tactics, and like... half the SRPGs out there.

                      Does Agro in SotC count?

EDIT: Wait, I forgot about the epilogue, derp. It's been too long since I played it.

I think Argo counts if Chrono does. And yeah, I was thinking more in-game rather than something that happens as during the ending. Something that has some effect on gameplay and story.

ff6 if you count Celes failing to feed Cid.

And Shadow if you failed to wait for him.

In Final Fantasy II, *** SPOILERS ***
practically everyone that joins your party that doesn't start the game with you dies. Josef, Menwu (okay I can't remember his name), and Ricard are the one's that bite the dust. In other words, don't bother teaching the forth party member any spells (or at least expensive ones.) The only ones that didn't seem to kick the bucket was Gordon and the pirate captian Leila. Gordon joins the party twice, but briefly. Leila does stay with the party for a quite a while, but does leave it eventually. I haven't beat the game yet so I'm not sure if Leon kicks the bucket, but it is bound to happen.
                              *** END SPOILERS ***

If you want to be real technical, even without the ending you could count FFX. *** SPOILERS ***
Seymour does join your party for one fight, so he was technically a member of the team for a brief moment. I guess you could say the same for Sephiroth who was with you for longer... nevermind he dies at the end.
