Castlevania the Adventure ReBirth doesn't look awful

It's starting to look nothing like the horrible GameBoy game, and not like a quick cash in thanks to some interesting level design sans empty rectangular rooms.

It honestly bears a very small resemblance to the original, and I could give a **** about the graphics because it's being made to look that way intentionally. Now we talk about our favorite Casltevania moments and post out favorite music.

Look at the other ReBirth games.

I'd rather have solid gameplay over a game with good graphics. Look at Portrait of Ruin, that game had over 100 enemies and they all acted the same. At least here, you can tell their priorities are straight and they aren't wasting money on assets.

I'd enjoy the ReBirth series a lot more if they didn't play like Baby's First Game. I know old games were hard but the ReBirth games practically hold your hand.

Dear Konami: Resurrect Parodius and Twinbee, please. Contra and Castlevania aren't your only games.

The Belmont in ReBirth looks like he walks too slowly and takes forever to go up a flight of stairs. That could be really annoying.

I don't know, the whole thing looks pretty clunky and unappealing.

That's pretty much how the original Castlevania's played out. Like Cosmic Jeff pointed out, they're "slow" but what the ReBirth remake fails to do is understand the importance in the original's enemy and level design. You had to time every move perfectly and memorize patterns to succeed. This style of gameplay is pretty archaic now but going back to Dracula X I get this rush of adrenaline counting the seconds between an enemy's projectiles so I can jump without getting knocked back mid-flight into a pit.

The video I posted demonstrates that not only does this ReBirth understand the importance of enemy placement but level design, but timing as well. It's the best Castlevania level design I've seen since Bloodlines. Yeah, it's slow and you can't jump on steps but it's supposed to be that way. Did anybody here notice that when you played as Maria in Dracula Chronicles X, it was essentially easy mode because of her double jump and how much easier it was to control her? I'm not saying you should make a game difficult to control to artificially establish difficulty, but you need to look at the framework of how the game is designed in its entirety. The biggest problem with the post-SOTN titles is the player's moveset evolved drastically, while the rest of the game didn't. Don't even get me started. There's a hell of a lot wrong with the series and while I could write a 10 page essay on the downfalls and redeeming qualities of the Castlevania series I just don't have it in me and I honestly don't think any of you would even read it. What I'm seing with this ReBirth title, though, is a return to the Classic Castlevania form. Essentially, the MM9 of the Castlevania series. We're all gonna have to wait and see how it actually turns out though, of course.

                        I would read it.

Also, although I don't like the aesthetics of the game - if it holds true to the form in that video - it could be a lot of fun.

For one the game doesn't resemble Castlevania: The Adventure in the slightest bit. It's more like Bloodlines which was an alright game but god, who wants a remake of that? Second, the crystal ball in C:TA upgraded you to the chain whip and then you got the fire whip with a second upgrade. If you got hit you automatically lost your upgrade.
The level design looks pretty simple and I cringed every time the dude playing it got hurt by one of the simple traps that has a completely obvious wind up.

The PSP remake was fantastic but I felt burned with Gradius and Contra ReBirth. They feel like generic games with a retro candy coating to attract people like me who reminesce about the "good ol' days" (which were admittedly pretty terrible).

And I'd read a 10 page dissertation on Konami milking Castlevania. Write it. Now.

I played Castlevania The Adventure on GameBoy quite a bit. In fact it's the only Castlevania I've played in any significant amount, though I don't remember how far I ever got in it. I now have Castlevania Dracula Chronicles X on PSP but other games have kept me from putting much time into it.

I don't think the level design in that video looks terribly exciting, but it DOES display at least some intent to place traps and enemies in places where they might provide some meaningful interaction for the player, which is a lot more than I can say for most of the recent handheld Castlevanias.

EDIT: I would kill for a remake of Bloodlines.
