    Ping?

I bought Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault last week and I finally got it online yesterday. I noticed this "ping" thing while playing online, in one of the matches someone complained that my "ping" was too high and that I was causing lag. I tried to ask what it is, but since most people online are complete douches to newcomers, they kind of ignored me. I don't understand it, I have a DSL connection. So can someone explain it to me in layman’s terms? And if anyone else has this game, let me know. Thanks.

      Re: Ping?

Oy vey. Ping is the amount of time in milliseconds it takes for your internet signal (the server) to their computer (the client). The higher it is, the longer it takes for the information to transfer between players and the slower the game plays (lag).

Your connection is part of it, but also the distance between people. I played Rainbow Six against my neighbor one time and got a 20 ping. On the other hand, I joined a HL2 game hosted by some Chinese clan and could barely even play through the lag. It depends on a bunch of factors, but basically to play online you just find a game with the lowest ping possible.

Thanks. I guess it doesn't help living in the middle of nowhere...Idaho. Most games my ping is in the 200 range. It's only been a couple of times that the people complain, most times there are other people with high pings as well, and I saw 400 last night. How does my high ping affect them though? Why does it lag the whole game and not just me? Eh, still fun, even though I’m being owned just about every match. Thanks again.

There's something seriously wrong with that. I have dial up and my ping usually doesn't get that high.

I think different games may rate it differently.

Ive seen people in some games with 1000+ ping.

Ah, well that would explain it then. I figured it would be a universal measurement but things are never that simple when it comes to online gaming.

The reason it lags the whole game, and not just you, might be because the games adjust themselves to run at the speed of the highest ping in the current game to give everyone a fair chance. Either that, or maybe it's because the game has to use more resources with higher pings, or something.

It mainly depends on the type of game you are playing.
In the case of Shooters, where there is a small amount of people in an enclosed area, information is transfered between those players quite rapidly. The information is "shared" so to speak, with each player holding onto a piece of that info. Having a high Latency (aka Ping) will effect all the other players, as your share of the information does not match the other pieces exactly.

Hopefully that makes some sort of sense.
