Synopsis

Witch be Bad is a game about, well, a witch who’s just plain BAD. The game starts with the menacing with Najina calling forth 4 demons/zombies/what-have-you in a very menacing ritual. Moments after this scene we are introduced the the main party of Zekkid, Infamy, asdasd, and asdasd. The game takes a stab at humor with their dialogue and a stab at humor in their names so I can only assume this game shoots for the comedy sub-genre and I agree, this game is somewhat comedic!

So the gang decides it would be a great idea to search for the “Lost Treasure” and off to the Eerie Caves they go. Unfortunately, it is here that they run into the evil witch herself! The game sends us into our first boss fight after a short spelunking expedition and it is here that I must comment on the enemies. You see, these enemies are strikingly similar to the stock enemies given to you in the game. They’re so similar that I would have to hazard a guess that they’re one in the same! The game loses its feel of originality in seconds flat as a result of this.

So after the boss fight and a few scenes the game points you to a new town, Fardon. For whatever reason I can’t help but chuckle when I say that town’s name. Fardon, Fardon, Fardon. Anyway, there’s a see named Joe who tells you that to the treasure you have to find the witch, and to find the witch you have to get a boat from good ole’ Bob. Based on what Joe has said about Najena’s abuse on the townspeople, Bob should be more than happy to give you his boat to go off to her castle to vanquish her. Of course, that’s not the case! Instead he tells you that he will lend you his boat if you find his toy boat that he lost 20 years ago by a well and then proceeds to laugh at you. Um… What?

So I get this toy boat from the well (which was accessible from the world map a large distance away from the town, go figure) and bring it to Bob. Of course, he’s ecstatic that I’ve found him a boat that’s just like the one he had as a wee lad and so he gives the heroes a boat pass to go and fight the evil witch. To the docks! So off the heroes go to the heart-shaped island in which the evil witch resides. I am saddened to say that it is at this point that the game breaks on me. I did, indeed, make it to the castle but as soon as I tried to leave the island I was thrust into an area of half-nothingness, half-grass. Thus comes an abrupt end to a game that might have been able to redeem itself.

Sound – 0/10?

Unless there was something terribly wrong with the sound plug-in on my emulator, this game was almost entirely barren of sound. By that I mean the intro to the actual Maker had sound but this game seemed to be lacking. I’m hoping it was my fault and not the games but I did manage to get sound in the editor as well, so who knows?

Design – 3/10

In terms of level design this game is horribly unoriginal and linear. Ugh. In fact, the second town, Fardon, the buildings are lined up in a very pentagonal manner. There are 5 buildings total and the 4 minor buildings are lined up in a 2x2 grid with the fifth, much larger building centered and at the top. Dungeons are very unimaginative as well. The creator went ahead and recycled the same room (Basically a 4-way intersection with a doorway at each end) over and over again in one of the dungeons.

Story - 1/10

The story is pretty flimsy and the character development is completely nonexistent. There’s not a single dramatic moment in this game that I experienced (by dramatic I mean involving enough to count as real drama).

Gameplay – 5/10

The battles were bearable enough. Sure, I fought every single by mashing X (save for the random times I had to heal), but they weren’t super tough or anything. In fact, I’m fairly certain a number of the enemies were taken straight from the game’s archive. Other than that, it was OK.

My score for this game? 2.25/10
