    Interracial couple denied marriage license

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091015/...rracial_rebuff

    Yeah...

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it."

Cuz, y'know, they could grow up to be President.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way,"

...doesn't that make you a racist?

    Yeah, it does.

This guy should already be fired for not doing his job. His lame statements just make the whole situation worse.

Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.
Uh, I got news for you, buddy. Most marriages don't last long.

Why should they have to? They have the same rights as any other couple. It's pretty insulting, too.

How would you feel if you went to get married and they told you no, but it was only because of their own personal problems?

This idiotic JP has a job to do, but he isn't doing it. He should be fired.

They shouldn't have to, but lots of people have to do things they shouldn't have to. If it was me I would go somewhere else just because it seems like the easier thing to do.

Not if you own a house.

Precisely, it's the principle of the matter. They could go get married by someone else, but the fact is they shouldn't have been turned down in the first place.

I just like how this Justice of the Peace goes to such lengths to reassure everyone that he's not racist and has lots of black friends (in awfully patronizing language), but he's so heinously, transparently bigoted.

Ugh, just angers the hell out of me.

                What?

I don't think you really understand this situation.

This couple's rights are being trampled on. They have a right to get a marriage license, and this JP has NO right to deny them that based on their race. That's unacceptable and wrong.

If it was me I would go somewhere else just because it seems like the easier thing to do.
If you were discriminated against, you'd feel bad. I don't think you've ever experienced anything like that, or you'd have a better understanding of what that feels like and just how wrong it is.

I'd go get married somewhere else AND sue the pants off of whatever office this guy works for.

"I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."
You have no idea how hard I laughed at this.

I love it when people justify their bigotry. Whenever someone ends a racist remark with "I have lots of black/gay/whatever friends" I can't help but laugh.

Well, once I couldn't ride a plane cause I was to fat. And Had to sit at the front of the school bus when I was little because I wasn't old enough to sit in the back. I'm pretty sure this is kinda like that.

I don't think you can sue his office, because it's a state court of law. Just as you couldn't sue any other court if you lose a case.

I bet they left a nasty comment card in his suggestions box, though!

                          Wha?

I can't imagine that happening unless you were obese enough that you took up two or three seats.

The school bus thing has no relation to this. Being fat is also something you can usually change if you really want to (through diet, exercise, surgery, etc.), unless it's due to a chonic health issue.

                            You can't change your race.

I'll give you a better example. Imagine that someone refused to let you attend the college you wanted to go to because of the color of your skin. It has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with them and their own personal feelings. Would you just blow it off and "go somewhere else?" Doubtful.

This kind of behavior is unacceptable and completely inexcusable coming from anyone, let alone a public servant.
