    Denmo's Awesome Artist Thread

This thread is both to share and chronicle contemporary artists that I find as I study to become an art teacher. I want to have a repertoire of these awesome artists to give as examples to my students. Feel free to post any artists you find particularly amazing, and be sure to give awesome examples.

    Today: Andy Goldsworthy

This guy is an unbelievably talented and meticulous sculptor who uses only what he finds in nature as both inspiration and materials.

We're watching Rivers and Tides right now in class, and later will be doing similar group art projects around the school (which normally doesn't allow any outside sculptures displayed!). I'm really looking forward to it.

If I were an art teacher, I couldn't resist bringing up Banksy at some point.

Even in the day time, this guy makes excellent use of shadows to give his drawings an unsettling atmosphere

My favorite artist of all time is Tomomi Kobayashi. Better known for her artwork on Square's SaGa series.

Large pics, so I'll just have the links.

Creative and masterful use of a medium that I had toyed around with while bored but never thought to take it further earns this guy a place in my Awesome Artist list.

Well there's been a lot of nights in yours and my life, and sometimes we got lonely so we just "got by."

We totally just watched Rivers and Tides on Friday. Not only is Mr. Goldsworthy an awesome artist (Who would think to use wool?) but the cinematography was excellent too.

I also love that he makes art just for the sake of making it. He actually likes that it melts, washes away with the tide, etc. So cool!

Punchdrunk is a British theatre company that made Sleep No More: a huge, interactive, multi-tiered combination of Macbeth with Hitchcock-style sound design and an impossible attention to detail, all set up in an abandoned school.

You can go there and follow characters throughout the grounds on their descent into lunacy, hang out in the piano bar, or peruse through all of the characters' private things until one of them either catches you, seduces you, or stares at you until you leave.

It's Silent Hill: The Ride. If you live near New England, COME HERE. I will house you, and we will snuggle, and then we'll see this.

How do you take trash, and turn it into something beautiful, even functional, AND sell it for lots of money?

                    These guys figured it out:

This guy has quite a huge portfolio going for him! He's been commissioned for nearly every animated clay/digital picture for the past 20 years. Don't believe me? Just look at his portfolio! I'd show them here, but the images are huge. Absolutely incredible talent.
