    Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

In a stunning surprise, the Nobel Committee announced Friday that it had awarded its annual peace prize to President Obama “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

“He has created a new international climate,” the committee said in its announcement. President Obama’s name had not figured in speculation about the likely winner until minutes before the prize was announced here.

The full citation read: “The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.”

“Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the United States is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.”

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population,” the citation said.

“For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world’s leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama’s appeal that “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”

I think at this point Obama can take a dump and he'll win a medal of honor.

I think this is more of a "Hooray, You're Not GW Bush And You Might Actually Do Something With Your Job" prize.

Ugh, sorry Obama, but I'm certain someone else deserved that more.

pathetic, there is tons out there who deserve it more. obama hasnt done anything of note to deserve an award as coveted as this. its a slap in the face to those whove won this award after great struggles to extend peace.

Pretty much. I'm confident that Clinton would have won the prize had she been elected. America has been in worse condition under past presidents, but Bush is probably the most hated elected official both domestically and internationally in US history. Hitler could have risen from the dead and he'd have better approval ratings than Bush.

This is good. I am proud for/of our president. Obama said he felt he didn't deserve to stand among those who have received the same award. This is a symbol more than anything, of the shifting world view of America and it's president.

Nine months in office. His actions and goals regarding not torturing people, striving for a nuke-free world, and ending needless wars are pretty peaceful. He has much potential and this award should strengthen world opinion of him, allowing him to prove his worth as a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

Re: Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

So essentially this award is more for what he can potentially do in the future, than what he has actually done.

I don't think that necessarily deserves an award. That deserves an envelope with an I.O.U.

Fixed, but with the other Clinton in mind

I hate to this as I was never a huge fan of the man (and was too young to really understand his impact), but anyone who gets off this ass and changes the mind of Korea, regarding the release of 2 wrongfully imprisoned women/mother gets a from me
