PopCap plus Square Enix equals buh?

Gyromancer, basically a Puzzle Quest clone. Not sure if this is a good thing or a harbinger of a sordid future for gaming. I mean, one of the (okay, let's call a spade a spade...THE) premiere RPG devs/publishers teams up with THE premiere casual gaming company to bring out a Puzzle Quest knockoff? In theory, it's a good idea, to draw some casuals into RPGs. On the other hand, the North American mainstreaming of Square's stuff that began with Kingdom Hearts and might likely continue full-tilt with projects like this might make a game like Demon's Souls look that much more revolutionary ten years down the line.

How did I know this post was an excuse to bring up Demon's Souls

Incorrect, Mora. It was an excuse to once again express my dissatisfaction with the way the industry is sometimes headed, and it was a convenient reason to bring up Demon's Souls.

Eh. Square's just cashing in on the lucrative casual market made popular by digital markets and the fact that phones/mp3 players are capable of producing games that rival the handhelds. Who knows, maybe games like these will take over considering they have small budgets with high yields but good games have always been the minority, not the majority.

Seriously, I never once said casual = bad. I said good games are a minority compared to bad games and if you disagree with that you're pretty dumb. For every Toki Tori or Puzzle Quest you have 10 boring tower defense games that do nothing to change the genre. The video game market is the same as every other form of visual, literary, and artistic medium. The bad always outweighs the good.

That's not really how you worded it. You said that casual games could take over, and then you went on to say that bad games outweigh the good. It's pretty easy to see how I interpreted it that way after you just said that casual games could become dominant.

I understood what marcus was attempting to convey. There are good casual games (Bejeweled, Zuma, certain tower defense games like PixelJunk Monsters, if you wish to label that as casual), as well as there are bad ones. It's no different than saying there are good FPSes (Halo, Killzone, etc) and there are bad (Haze, The Conduit, etc).

Casual games are taking over but that's not something negative. My beef is that it's so easy for, say, a company of 1-2 people to churn out huge amounts of garbage but the profit return is so great they can make a living off it. I complain about casual games because the market is disgustingly saturated. I own several iPhone titles that I think are great but the library is so bloated that it takes hours just to search for a good game compared to several dozen websites for console/pc games that feature in depth coverage and video reviews.

Eventually there will be a mainstream publication solely dedicated to digital games which will help sort out the lowest of the low from the better games. There are several devoted to MP3/Palm games and applications but they don't cover solely video games like Nintendo Power or PSM does.

Edit: To coincide with the point of this topic, I think larger companies getting involved is a good idea. At least I know there will be a (higher) chance of seeing quality over mass quantity but devs like Ubisoft swoop in and break that idea of thinking.

Got into this discussion somewhat with a guy at my reunion tonight. So as not to say, "I work retail," and leave it at that, I was discussing with various people my RPGM/(hopefully) forthcoming at some point IG Maker projects, and everyone I mentioned this to mentioned the ipod. This one actually sorta famous guy (his band has had music featured in a number of TV shows) mentioned this (casual games 1-2 people churn out), and how people like his wife eat it up, and I basically said that I have no desire to do that. I likened it to a band selling out.

Of course, I didn't tell him that the program I'd be using (IG Maker) only can get put on the 360.

Now you have to tell us what the band is.

It's amazing seeing Mora deal with a two front war.
Find a dog, honk it's nose. If you are bothered by this sentence. I guess you're just not cool enough for the noses.
